Pharmacy worker - NHS.

My DM works in a busy pharmacy as a dispenser, in a Dr's surgery, (whilst also training on the job to further her career in that industry) - as you can imagine, she is rushed off her feet at the moment, long days and working what is supposed to be her day off.

Some of the supermarkets are opening early for NHS workers with an NHS card (she has one as is classed as working for them through the pharmacy) so she went to do her shopping during this time. It's also the only time she has had available due to working all hours.

I told my DP about this and he said she shouldn't have an NHS card for only working on a pharmacy, it's hardly a difficult job & that it should be for the drs & nurses!
This has given me the hump!

I know she's not performing heart surgery but she is still providing a service to everyone & classed as a key worker at this time so why shouldn't she go shopping when she's been informed she can.

AIBU to be annoyed about his comment?

Of course she should be allowed to use it! The pharmacy I use are all absolutely lovely and so helpful, I do hope they take advantage!

Your DH is a muppet !

She is absolutely a key worker !

What would your DH say if HIS pharmacy stopped their staff working and he did not get his prescription drugs ?

Or if he needed to contact GP surgery and no one answered ?

Snaga · 25/03/2020 16:56

Your DH is a muppet. All he'd need to do is observe any pharmacy and the stress written all over their faces at the moment. They aren't just essential workers, they're critical workers and things would be infinitely worse without them.

AutumnRose1 · 25/03/2020 16:57

Another one who’d like to thank your DM for her work.

I work in pathology so not front line and I've had this as well! It's not just for those who work extended hours either, I work from 8 until 5 and by the time I get to the supermarkets after work the shelves are empty. I can't get there in the morning as I've got a journey in and most of them aren't even open at that time. Almost cried last week after the umpteenth trip just to get some bread and ham for mine and my husbands lunch this week. It's alright for those who are at home, they can go anytime in the day.

I'm eternally grateful to the supermarkets that are opening for us.

Oh tell him to sod off. I “just” do admin in the NHS. No I don’t think my job is anywhere near as hard as the medical and nursing staff’s jobs but it’s still needed otherwise I wouldn’t be employed!

Michelleoftheresistance · 25/03/2020 17:02

YANBU in any way. Our local pharmacists are rushed off their feet all day every day in a very overloaded dispensary, that is now the only one open. I've never seen them in anything but flat out mode and that was before the virus. Crucial work, she should definitely have the card.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 25/03/2020 17:05

Dick.
They could be a cleaner on the wards, a senior consultant, a nurse, an admin clerk, a porter or a pharmacist for all I care. They all deserve a break from the madness.

WeakAsIAm · 25/03/2020 17:15

Nurse here, all NHS employees have a card, all deserve to and to use it.

All the staff in the NHS work and I couldn't do my job without them from the cleaner to the exec.

We're a family and we'll stick together

I am NHS admin and was redeployed to work in a dispensary today. They are absolutely snowed under and working under massive pressure in a job where a mistake could be life threatening.

randomchap · 25/03/2020 17:54

I work in the NHS but basically office hours and not front line. I'm not going to use the NHS slots as I think that the staff on shifts who are going to struggle to get to the shops should have them.

The pharmacist did the right thing in using the NHS slot. It's designed for that. Your DH thinking that pharmacy is hardly a difficult job is taking the piss.

Mouldiwarp1 · 25/03/2020 17:55

I work in a GP surgery (admin) and our dispensary is swamped at the moment. They are absolute stars. Perhaps you should also explain to your DH that NHS staff don’t have smartcards so they can go to Sainsbury’s early and get a bunch of free flowers - we need them to access the computer systems.
