To politely ask my neighbours to give some warning of burning stuff in their garden?!

Everyone is at home now, and rightly so. So what better time to take the opportunity to get your washing dry outside, especially when it's lovely and sunny. Except....smoke billowing into garden, all over lovely clean washing. So I sent a polite request out to our street Whatsapp asking them to please give us a bit of notice if they will be burning stuff in their gardens. Only to get bollocked as the group was set up to help others in the current situation.

AIBU??

What if the person is not on WhatsApp. Do you want them to chap every door during a pandemic? Do you ask your neighbours to give you notification of bbqs in the summer?

Most nice neighbours tell you if they are burning in their garden mine have a pizza oven and always warn me

LumaLou · 24/03/2020 14:42

YABU - the group was set up for a different purpose.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 24/03/2020 14:46

It's the only means I have to contact them and as I didn't know who was doing the burning I thought it was reasonable to politely ask via that forum.

BBQ's are different, and of course I don't ask for notice of those. This was black smoke billowing across the road into my garden in great big clouds.

YANBU, the last thing we need with a disease that damages the lungs is idiots polluting the atmosphere with their anti-social smoke.

If the group is to help others, not burning rubbish is helping others!

cologne4711 · 24/03/2020 15:05

And BBQs should not be happening either unless they are a purely household affair.

firawla · 24/03/2020 15:14

I don’t think they should be burning stuff at the moment- it’s obvious people will be relying on their gardens! Very inconsiderate

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 24/03/2020 15:15

Good point @cologne4711

That was my point around people wanting to use their gardens without breathing in smoke. I don't think it's unreasonable to use the group for that purpose, but clearly the whatsapp police of our street disagree!

We had a small fire the other day (home schooling!) and the smoke really irritated my already tight lungs. So I agree inappropriate right now, on two counts.

AmericanAdventure · 24/03/2020 15:22

Good point re lung issue. Also risk of burns... Personally I'm avoiding anything that might send us to A&E 😬
