Signing for deliveries

After developing a cough on Sunday, the household is in isolation.

I had a delivery from John Lewis booked for this week (ordered before the cough appeared), so I phoned to tell them that I wasn't leaving the house or having any contact with anyone and to ask if there was an alternative to having to sign for it. Off the top of my head I came up with the delivery being left on the doorstep and me being photographed at the window giving a thumbs up Blush.

My question seemed to take them by suprise, but after checking, they came back and said I could receive the delivery after my 14 days were up (which was absolutely fine with me).

But surely having to sign for items is a really bad idea at this time - the terminal or whatever is used needs to go through multiple hands and all via the poor delivery driver.

I appreciate that fraud is potentially a massive issue, but aibu to think that companies need to be looking at alternatives?

Most companies have stopped asking for signatures

Any deliveries we've had in the past week, including a tesco food shop, has been put on the step by the courier, they then knock on the door, step back, we answer, they sign for it and walk away, we pick up the item and close the door.

There was 1 delivery that had included my "safe place" on the label and the courier took it straight there rather than knock on the door. When I got the text to confirm delivery, I went out and brought in.

There are definitely ways round the public signing for deliveries

We haven't had to sign for any deliveries we would have had to usually. Pretty sure delivery companies are now being told not to. Certainly Amazon aren't taking signatures any more and DPD didn't either yesterday. Royal Mail didn't either.

I didn't have to sign for my food delivery, the driver knocked on the door and I asked him through the (closed) window if he could leave it on the doorstep, which he was fine with.

Amazon, Tesco and DPD have stopped asking for signatures anyway.

I have a note on the outer door to put parcels in the porch and to ring the bell only if they must which seems to be working.

Hermes asked me to sign even though i got email saying they wouldn't anymore

WorraLiberty · 24/03/2020 14:50

I got a delivery this morning and the driver signed the little screen with 'C V' and showed it to me.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 24/03/2020 14:51

I haven’t been asked to sign for anything - in fact the delivery today he knocked really fast then ran away!! I’ve been kicking deliveries in with my foot and then leaving them in the garage for 2 days!

PennyNotSoWise · 24/03/2020 14:56

Yeah, I had a delivery from Royal Mail on Monday, and they had a notice on their website beforehand saying they weren't asking for signatures, but they'd still ask for the name of the person taking the delivery.
The postie knocked the door, left the parcel on my doorstep and took off up the road without even checking anyone was there to take it in Confused Can't say I blame him, but the content of the parcel was expensive, and anyone could've nabbed it.

handslikecowstits · 24/03/2020 14:57

Got a delivery this morning. Driver put the parcel near the gate and called to me from across the drive. He effectively signed for me by asking who I was.

Loooobyloo · 24/03/2020 14:59

I've been delivering parcels today. We put the parcel on the doorstep, knock, wait for an answer and sign cv19. Or leave in a safe place.

Whoareyoudududu · 24/03/2020 15:01

All deliveries should be contactless now so should be left on the doorstep or in a safe place. Definitely shouldn’t sign for them.

WorraLiberty · 24/03/2020 15:02

in fact the delivery today he knocked really fast then ran away!!

Yodel have been doing that for years Grin Grin

adaline · 24/03/2020 15:04

I've had several deliveries since coronavirus became a problem and they've all knocked, stepped two metres back, handed me the parcel and scarpered!

SquashedSpring · 24/03/2020 20:30

Hopefully John Lewis will take note from other companies, if not I'm going to cancel the order.
