So, will my sofas be delivered?!

Because I assumed not. Which is fine, we waited 10 weeks, we're happy to wait as longer.

But I got an email this morning from Next to say their shops have closed but their online store and deliveries haven't??

I obviously will call them at 9, but I wasn't even going to bother doing that because I assumed their offices had closed?

I think I don't understand the whole thing.

I think a lot of companies are taking the step to go on Hold even though the government has not shut them down as such.

We were getting wardrobes fitted in a couple of weeks and that’s been delayed now as they shut down due to the virus. It’s the right move but disappointing, you can’t argue with the line of “we are keeping our employees and customers safe”.

Amazon is on a hiring frenzy so I guess not all companies are pausing.

We had a bed for my daughter due to be delivered this morning. I assumed, as you have it wouldn’t be arriving, but it did!
They rang to check we still wanted it delivering to the room as they could doorstep it instead but they were still happy to deliver.
They said that as of tomorrow it would be doorstep delivery only but they were still delivering.

NotGenerationAlpha · 24/03/2020 16:59

It's hard to define essentials though. I ordered 5 reams of paper from amazon. They aren't essential as clearly we can all live without printing paper. But I needed them to print DC's work from school. Which I never did before because school prints them.

The dilemma of things we now need because we work from home.

There will be lots of these desks, chairs, printers, monitor stands, mice, keyboards, USB hubs needed all over the country now.

I got my microwave today and getting my dryer delivered I'm hoping ds gets his smyths delivery for his birthday I ordered his presents last weeks so fingers crossed x

NotGenerationAlpha · 24/03/2020 17:00

Actually, with all the office equipment, we got them all 3 weeks ago before the lockdown. I saw it coming and we went to get an entire home office set up so we don't have to work on the dining table. It's really bad for your back if you are in your middle age.

NotGenerationAlpha · 24/03/2020 17:03

Also, if this goes on to September, my children won't be able to fit into their clothes anymore. I'll need to be able to buy something to put them in too.

adaline · 24/03/2020 17:08

All our deliveries have arrived as normal.

sunflower1201 · 24/03/2020 17:08

I work for a major retailer in distribution. Even through our stores are closed we are still delivering as usual. In fact, our deliveries are higher than usual at this time of year.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/03/2020 17:12

Clothes, microwaves and the other thing mentioned are all essential items.

And over priced, pretty, sofa - is not.

Next delivered our sofa this morning. They didnt unpack it though, new rules due to CV. Fair enough

MarginalGain · 24/03/2020 17:18

I put in a sizeable Amazon order today, it seems they are prioritising 'essentials' which includes books, groceries, and personal care but my Apple laptop charger will still arrive in less than 24 hours.

EThreepwood · 24/03/2020 17:26

Was due an IKEA bed yesterday. They came but said it was doorstep policy now. 6 heavy boxes up the stairs now and I'm black and blue. I wish they just hadn't of come! 😖

uftmum · 24/03/2020 18:22

I ordered my DM an ipad today

Nobody is saying a new sofa is an essential, it’s just that when people have ordered them months ago, the company has to make a decision on whether to deliver them or not.

We ordered two sofas back at the end of November to replace our 17 year old sofas, one of which has a big rip in the cover. We bought them from Harvey Norman, who called a few days ago to say they had them, their delivery is done by a separate company.

The delivery company phoned, checked we didn’t have symptoms, asked if we could stay away from the delivery drivers and use our own pen to sign. They were to deliver this morning, got a phone call this morning to ask if we’d be able to bring them into the house ourselves, as quite reasonably, they don’t want to send them into people’s houses.
So we had to ask them to hold on to them as dh and I wouldn’t be able to lift them in ourselves. They’re electric recliners and very heavy.

DH spoke to Harvey Norman to explain and they said they wouldn’t have expected them to deliver them anyway. So I think they’ve been pretty good about it, as I’m sure some companies would be pressuring to deliver them so they could get their money.

SquashedSpring · 24/03/2020 18:54

I was due a delivery from John Lewis this week, but as we are in the 14 day lock down, I phoned to ask if they could leave it outside without a signature if I was watching through the window. They insisted that a signature would be needed, so it's been rearranged for a couple of weeks.

It seems crazy not to look for a safer way to deliver items. Unless they come up with one, I'm going to cancel.

SquashedSpring · 24/03/2020 18:55

That was meant to say "14 day isolation".
