School pressure in this crisis

I should probably put this in the special needs board? Just had an e mail from a teacher (10.30pm) about work that's just been set on a homework app. To me only.
School closed on Friday, life has stopped kids. For our son he's lost all his sport activities, which were vital to control his hyper behaviour and wellbeing. Had the announcement of the lockdown earlier this evening. I've checked the app and there are multiple homeworks being set by different teachers. His concentration is very poor and he can't possibly complete it at home without the school environment and the support he gets from a learning support assistant. This is pure pressure.
I am trying to keep our son calm, he's been a real handful at home and it's only been 3 days. AIBU to e mail senco ? I need to keep our home calm and our son safe. We don't need homework arguments

This pressure from schools is ridiculous in this crisis

It is a little unfair to be moaning about perceived pressure from work, when they are only emailing tasks to do, if you want to do them. They would be vilified if they didn’t send any work. And don’t think the teacher likes this either, poor thing also working late into the evening like your DH.

I don’t think the teacher did only send one email to you. The teacher would have put all email addresses in the BCC field, so that you would not see other email addresses due to GDPR as an SLT has mentioned upthread.
I truly sympathise with your situation which must be very hard, tiring and stressful. But the fault of this is the global pandemic and not your DS’ school.
If you don’t like the work that is being emailed to you (and it isn’t homework) then is it possible to ask your DS what he would like to do or can you find anything online for him to do, from the myriad of free resources currently out there and plenty aimed at your DS?

Freda we're already getting complaints that not enough work is being set even with 5 subjects per day.

ChloeDecker · 24/03/2020 07:10

Sorry FredaFrogspawn but a lot of what you have written is bollocks.

Hercwasonaroll · 24/03/2020 07:10

Plus the pupils in school literally need occupying for 5 hours. Because they are in school and have nothing else to do. They do 1 hour PE then work.

Please just do what you can do to get yourself and your families through this time safely and with as little conflict as possible.

I'm a teacher, I have to set work, some of my students can't get enough because they have nothing else to do and are racing through tasks, it gives them some normality and control through this situation. Some students haven't attempted anything yet, I don't know why, maybe they can't access online work, maybe their mental health is not good, perhaps they are ill, they might be busy watching TV....there could be dozens of reasons.
I am not judging them or their parents at all, their parents I am sure have enough to worry about.

Teachers will be finding ways to fill in the gaps and consolidate learning at school when this is all over.

Please just do what works for you.

I'm struggling with working and 3 kids but this isn't about pressure from schools this is about them keeping up with their education. If they are going to be out of school until September they are effectively losing a quarter of a GCSE course for example. I don't want my kids to get behind at school so I will force them to do it (painful though it is) but as a parent it's up to you what you make them do (or not) but the info needs to be available for the kids who are able (or made!) to complete it

FredaFrogspawn · 24/03/2020 08:00

Sorry FredaFrogspawn but a lot of what you have written is bollocks.

I’m forgetting that all schools and all intakes are different. It’s not bollocks for our context but of course it may be for yours.

Apologies for using the word ‘irresponsible’ in an irresponsible fashion.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 24/03/2020 08:08

@FredaFrogspawn I think the issue is that it is impossible outsode of classroom to cater for all students in the same way as if we were in. In class, I would say- everyone needs to complete this amount of work, some of you this amount of work, and here is an extension for those who finished. Online, all I can do is write it down and hope for the best. It is possible to group students and set different tasks, but it would take forever, more than the actual teaching (plus we also have to mark what students send us). So setting max amount of work we think they should do is the best solution, as students then can scale it down to whatever they can do. It's easier than set something which is too little and then be expected to set another task for those who want/need more.

I think in the OPs case, either the school did not communicate the expectations, or she did not read the communication. In the school I have been doing supply they said that in case of there being multiple siblings, and lots of work set online, they understand that f.ex. 3 kids in the same household wont be able to do all the work having to share one computer.

FredaFrogspawn · 24/03/2020 08:18

We thought hard about that issue of one computer in families with more children. We have tried to send some work home as paper work packs and are making lots of generic wellbeing ‘activity’ suggestions. Like the rest of you, we’re really concerned about our students and their families. Tough times.

ChloeDecker · 24/03/2020 09:07

Thank you FredaFrogspawn

Even in one school the situation is different. I am in a department of three and two of them are I’ll currently, do it is just me sending subject work to all Year 7s through to 13. Responding to their questions in their droves and providing extra ‘enrichment’ work.

In other departments, even in my own school, there are 8 or 9 different staff to spread the load for them.

That’s why no school is putting on unnecessary pressure. Everyone is just trying to do their best.
