To lament the loss of my nails *lighthearted*

I have spent the last 12/18 months growing my nails and strengthening them with the help of my lovely nail tech. I now have pretty nails every 3 weeks - the only remotely feminine thing about it - but now she has to close.

AIBU to be absolutely devastated for what will surely be the loss of my nails and return to butchered hands? Wink

What's eveyone else's first world problems at the moment?

I think you can file them down then soak in acetone to gently lift them off @bubblesbuddy

Travis1 · 23/03/2020 15:57

If you can get your hands on acetone @BubblesBuddy then use a nail file to buff the shiny layer down as far as you can. Soak make up remover pads in acetone and put them on your nails and cover in foil. After about 5/10 minutes you should be able to scrape any remaining product away.

RIP my gels and brows hah! 😂 I feel you @Travis1 lol

ThatLibraryMiss · 23/03/2020 16:01

If we cannot get the infills, how long until they grow out?

Nails grow at about 1/4" per month, so it depends on how long your nail beds are and how much longer you wear your nails.

Can they be filed down so it’s a smoother line between my nail and the acrylic?

Yes, but if you file down the arch you'll lose a lot of the strength so you'll need to file down the length too, or risk them breaking very low down (ouch!).

I’m looking on the bright side. No need to wear makeup when I’m just staying at home. I’m hoping my skin will look fabulous in 2 weeks

PerfidiousAlbion · 23/03/2020 16:04

I saw this on Insta yesterday and it made me laugh. My foils were due this week but the hairdresser closed on Saturday. So glad Ive been getting a root stretch for the last year!

I took my gel polish off last night, buffed, cotton ball soaked in remover and wrapped in foil for 15. It came off easily. I'm not good at painting but i found a bottle of Dior nail glow I got last Christmas. I love it. Today I'm going to attempt to dye my hair. Its taking my mind off how I can keep my business going & how long I can keep paying my small team.

Meeda · 23/03/2020 16:08

I've soaked my acrylics off today. Pleasantly surprised with my natural nails. Have painted them quickly to stop me from picking! If I manage to keep them looking half decent, I won't bother with the acrylics again.

Also had to buy a box dye 😱. Need to cover greys!

I’m a bit worried that DH will take a razor to his own hair because he hates it getting long and floppy.

fishonabicycle · 23/03/2020 16:23

Eyebrows need threading - no chance of that. They'll probably join up with my eyelashes now.

Stampy84 · 23/03/2020 16:32

@edwinbear
I feared the same. Word of advice though-do not try and give yourself a Hollywood wax... take it from me, it doesn’t end well 👀

ForFiveMinutes · 23/03/2020 16:34

Nails, pedicure, massage and reflexology appointments all cancelled. Luckily I had my hair cut and foiled last weekend.
Having daily video call meetings with work team so will have to have some attempt at grooming.....

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/03/2020 16:37

My curls - using shampoo rather than co-washing, and definitively back to frizz rather than curl.

@Travis1 - try Essie's TLC (Treat love and Care I think) it's a treatment nail varnish, and really easy to apply. My nails improved noticably within six weeks, and now really strong.
I apply once a week, add top coat, and another top coat layer every other day. No basecoat.

I last got my nails and eyebrows done on Thursday 5th March, I usually go every two weeks so my next appointment would have been Thursday 19th. However my birthday is Wednesday 1st April so I would have been due my next appointment on the 2nd. I didn't want my birthday nails two weeks old, so instead I stretched out the wait to three weeks, and had my appointment booked for this coming Thursday 26th. Also my wedding anniversary is Thursday 9th April, so two weeks from the 26th is the 9th, so would have worked out perfect - birthday nails the week before my birthday, then wedding anniversary nails done on the day itself.
Obviously how I won't be able to go, I'm hoping it won't be for too long and they last (my lady always comments how well I look after them so), I'll get some nail glue in case I need it (my lady said I can glue them in an emergency until I can get to her). I don't want to take them off as I'm not me without my long nails. Hoping they last until I can go and get them done.
As for my eyebrows I've always promised I'd leave the tweezers alone. But on this occasion if I get desperate I might pluck the stray hairs at the bottom and top, just obviously make sure I avoid the arch/ shape, as my lady gives them a perfect shape and I don't want to mess them up.

Chinks123 · 23/03/2020 19:40

Eyebrows desperately need waxing, roots need doing, and my Russian lashes won’t get infilled Sad It’s only dp and the kids who will actually see me until all this is over so I’m just mum bunning it and ignoring my face.

Minxmumma · 23/03/2020 19:47

To not have an occasion to wear my gorgeous brand new red shoes to. Sighs...... love my shoes Wink

Cheerbear23 · 23/03/2020 20:19

I’ve plucked then waxed tops and bottoms of brows to get a clean finish. I’m fairly pleased with them. I’ve bought dyelash tint for lashes and brows so I’ll give that a go.
I’m ok at painting my own nails, I’ve done a colour b4 remover and my hair and currently sporting all ginger to dark fade... not too pleased about that but I’m going to do the ends again and hopefully it will be more even.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 23/03/2020 20:27

Well I’ll be rocking the 1970s karma sutra look at the end of this!

Have my roots done every 6 weeks so likely also be rocking a skunk look! Luckily had them done a couple of weeks ago

TheVanguardSix · 23/03/2020 20:30

Back to pudding bowl haircuts for the kids! My 18-year-old will be reliving his childhood! Grin

JADS · 23/03/2020 20:36

I haven't had my haircut since August and booked in for a cut and colour next week Sad. Messy bun for me.

mineofuselessinformation · 23/03/2020 20:47

I have a pixie cut so heaven only knows what I'll look like!
OP, I do my own nails (fairly successfully) at home with gel. Could you get a kit?

My eyebrows will be a state! And my hair may have grown out to it's original colour 😱

AriadneCrete · 23/03/2020 21:13

@PerfidiousAlbion that will be me 😂

I have extensions that were due to be replaced on Saturday, but the hairdressers shut. I regularly get my legs, underarms and Hollywood wax and haven’t shaved in nearly 10 years. I don’t even know if I have a razor anymore!

Solidarity with all those with gel nails! I’ve ordered some acetone on Amazon off the back of this thread and I’m off to hunt for a nail file. Fingers crossed I find one!
