Are all minority groups dead in the water temporarily?

With what the world is going through now, is it time to put personal belief on the back burner and just get through this awful time. Come together whatever your beliefs,

Political persuasions, veganism, climate change, etc....

How is climate change a minority group? Confused

There is one group - the human one.

Reginabambina · 23/03/2020 13:52

You seem to have confused belief systems with minority status.

justasking111 · 23/03/2020 14:00

Well nitpick my phrasing all you like, my basic question is whatever you are fighting, whether it be covids or plastics, should we set it aside TEMPORARILY!! whilst the world is in such turmoil or sit back and regroup when things settle down. Or should we use this as an opportunity to lean on governments, institutions?

Are the powers that be going to be interested at this time?

Veganism?

Try being in the minority group of planet earth

slipperywhensparticus · 23/03/2020 14:03

And no we shouldn't stop fighting fighting plastic pollution those people in the ocean are probably quite safe right now

Lockheart · 23/03/2020 14:03

What?

BecauseReasons · 23/03/2020 14:05

my basic question is whatever you are fighting, whether it be covids or plastics, should we set it aside TEMPORARILY

If you're fighting covid I'd have said you're probably best to keep doing it.

sonjadog · 23/03/2020 14:06

Belief systems aren't something you turn on and off. My belief systems are the same as they were two months ago, and they aren't going to change in the coming weeks. They aren't a hobby that can be put on a back burner. I think that goes for most people.

LuxLFC · 23/03/2020 14:07

When you say minority groups it implies ethnicity, at least it does to me. Lots of people lost the plot on here today, rainbows & tik tok now this shite.

Grumpos · 23/03/2020 14:11

What do you mean?
Put our differences aside - ie political, religious, cultural....and pull together for the greater good? Don’t most ppl do that anyway? I wouldn’t refuse to help someone just because they ate a KFC last week and I’m a veggie...

You can’t not be a minority though. I’m sure you’re not asking ethnic minorities to forget about their ethnicity?

If you’re asking racists, sexists, homophobes and other mouth breathers to not be arseholes to other people then yes I agree. That’d be nice.

annamie · 23/03/2020 14:13

You are an idiot, OP.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 14:20

Que?
Sorry, not sure what your AIBU actually is Confused
No, YANBU in thinking everyone should be pulling together regardless of who they are/their beliefs.
No idea what minority groups have to do with anything though Confused

justasking111 · 23/03/2020 14:24

I have been banging the drum for years, volunteering for veterans services, hospice services, recycling/re-using, I just wondered if I should zip it for a bit, you all think I should not. Not sure that will be popular with folk I know just now though. mmm...

OP posts:
Xenia · 23/03/2020 14:25

Nature of course is now prevailing in lots of ways - virus over humans, fish in rivers in Venice, animals and plants and viruses taking over humans.

Minority group reference is a bit confusing. Men seem to be more likely to be hospital with this thing than women so there may well be a gender issue in it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/03/2020 14:29

This virus is proving the climate change activists right. People in built up cities in India and China are seeing blue sky and hearing birds for the first time in a generation

picklemewalnuts · 23/03/2020 14:49

Don't take advantage of a stretched and desperate government to push your agenda, no.

Do carry on living according to your values as best you can. I'd say that should include working with people you don't necessarily ally with for the shared purpose of surviving Covid19 19.

AutumnRose1 · 23/03/2020 14:50

You don’t actually mean “minority groups” do you.

Dyrne · 23/03/2020 14:51

I don’t really understand, OP. I think you personally can easily quietly keep on supporting your groups and causes, but I agree that now is not the time to be shaking the collection tin at people who may be extremely worried about being out of work. I also think that a lot of people would not appreciate someone banging on about the “silver lining” of improved environment if their loved one is currently fighting for their life.

I would encourage people to perhaps put aside some of the more esoteric volunteering & fundraising and focus on more immediate community issues for the moment - though I do appreciate we are heading for a longer term economic crisis and issues for charities down the line if funding dries up completely.

LovePoppy · 23/03/2020 15:16

....so we should just let the racists and sexists get on with it to not fight?

Because you know they aren’t changing their beliefs

OnlyaMan · 24/03/2020 21:55

The OP is saying that there is a hierarchy of importance.
The top of the list is right now this horrible pandemic. We should all deal primarily with problem number one.
When "Problem number one" is over, (as it eventually will be, we hope), we can return to "Problem number two, three," and so on.
If Climate Change Activists etc: then find that their concerns were a bit silly, then they will change their views. Or they may not.
But that is for the future.
