I understand that places like parks and beaches remained open but are beginning to close because people should get fresh air but then all flocked to the same places.

However several attractions such as zoos are still advertising for people to come and see their newborns! Apparently you can social distance within them but surely people will be crowding round the new borns, sharing the same toilets and touching the same doors and fences around exhibits?

I understand that they cant afford to lose money but surely thats irresponsible?

I bet people who are objecting to you are clinging on to some sort of normality and think a wander round a zoo is fine, we are all on edge this is nuts we don't know how to behave or respond, a holiday park we sometimes go to was offering a discount last week Shock

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2020 11:15

I see wingham has closed.

Back to comments on zoos - daft to open, they should reduce to skeleton staff to keep animals fed, hopefully the 80% salary grant will help them keep afloat.

But they need so much more than just staff salaries. They need to be able to feed the animals, to clean enclosures, to get the animals treated by the vet. I know our local zoo is often supplied by local suppliers when it comes to food, but if they shut, the zoo will have to pay more.

I suspect many will not be able to survive this. I wonder what will happen to the animals?

The exotic animal sanctuary here has closed yesterday and put a crowdfunding appeal up. I feel really sorry for them and just pray they can survive.

A little zoo near me closed midweek they have mainly rescue and elderly animals had people asking about getting their membership refunded that totally baffled me the animals still need cared for !

I just read winghams statement which is really sad.

Its sad that they immediately have to make statements about things like extending annual passes when you can see they are clearly struggling.

I can sort of see why they were hoping to stay open. Many have reduced hours/closed over the winter so this was the beginning of their season to really get the coffers healthy.

On paper a large area with animals spread across the zoo sounds like the perfect place to get fresh air, in reality that hasn't worked out. Hopefully they can find ways of raising money to feed the animals in a different way.

One place local to my parents is actively promoting their "sponsor" programme being explicitly clear how much it costs to feed and care for the animals and asking for donations to do this. I think they're hoping by being blunt, those with funds and who care will help care for the animals.

Anywhere that houses primates should be closed for their own safety - great apes are capable of catching viruses from humans (that's why the caregivers on Orangutan Jungle School always wear masks) and many types of monkey are thought to be susceptible too.

I saw a TV advert over the weekend for the Merlin pass. Why, just why?

nevermorelenore · 23/03/2020 13:05

Our local one is still open. It's a small independent zoo and even during the week it's pretty packed. There would be no way of properly socially distancing. They're also offering free tickets to those in the NHS, nice gesture but surely they won't have the time or energy to go to a zoo right now. Plus, they're the most likely to have been exposed.

So difficult, exmoor have made a comment about how they might have to put animals to sleep.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 23/03/2020 14:12

@Quickquestion2020 a lot of then are charities and would love donations, especially in times like this.

Hugt · 23/03/2020 17:21
