To not apply for a job

Hello!
I'm new to this site so apologise if i haven't posted this correctly.
I am a supply teacher in Cheshire and schools have shit so I have no work for maybe 6 months - hopefully less!

I'm 25 and I live at home with my parents and 8 year old sister.
I was making good money before the virus - averaging at around £400 a week,
I have a couple of thousand saved.
I'm hoping this couple of thousand will last me until schools open as realistically I won't be spending apart from phone bill and car insurance. I'm very lucky.

My dad is 50 and has a lot of underlying problems with his heard, blood pressure and asthma but he is still currently working.
Not much jobs are going in my area but frankly i'd rather isolate now and not put myself on the frontline in a supermarket in fear my father will get it. I know this may be selfish.
I've stayed in the house for 3 days now apart from going to do some shopping for family. I'm waiting for Boris to announce a lockdown.
But thoughts?

You could home school your 8 year old sister. Grin. There is probably no point trying to get a teaching job at the moment.

notanurse2017 · 21/03/2020 23:27

Why does your dad feel that he has to work still, he sounds very vulnerable.

JuneTreeTop · 21/03/2020 23:28

He is assistant manager in a building store and he's waiting for them to be forced to close.
The main manager thinks it's all a joke

I just feel supermarkets are hiring for temporary staff but as i have a couple of thousand saved, i think i should leave these to people who are genuinely struggling and have rent and bills to pay,
I'm sure i can make this couple of thousand last until supply is needed again (as long as it's not past september)

I did apply for a supermarket job, went for the "interview", it was a 5 minute chat, and got invited to induction,
But my anxiety over my dad made me ring and thank them for the opportunity but i'll have to take my name off the induction list,

My anxiety is just off the roof. Is anybody else the same?

Can you possibly do tutoring via webcam?
Theres someone local to us advertising just that at £25 PH.

JuneTreeTop · 21/03/2020 23:59

I'm a primary teacher, would there be much of a market for that? I'll have a bit of research before bed :)

There will be a massive market for that as soon as the DC start to drive the parents over the edge or the parents feel confused by modern teaching methods.

So imminently Grin

justcly · 22/03/2020 00:05

I would happily pay for a primary teacher to occupy mine for even half an hour. We have four (five if you count my eldest, who I had when I was 14, but he's an adult now). My OH and I are already discussing whether or not we can sell a couple.

nevermorelenore · 22/03/2020 00:06

I was going to suggest online tutoring too. My friend did it and used to teach students from different countries as well as the UK.

JuneTreeTop · 22/03/2020 00:22

I'll have to research a bit into online tutoring! So used to teaching face to face that i'd have to get my head around teaching over a computer!
Thanks for the tip everybody! :)
I've been feeling terrible all day for turning down the supermarket,

OP you sound lovely and thoughtful, not selfish at all! Home-schooling your sister, helping out your folks and looking into online tutoring sounds very sensible and useful in your circumstances! Could you also contact schools you’ve worked with to let them know you could assist with creating online content/worksheets/etc. if they’re looking for any additional support or have staff off sick?

Sootyandsweep2019 · 23/03/2020 18:54

OP ,as you have savings under £16000.00 and are unable to work due to the coronavirus affecting your self employment, could you claim universal credit ? Will provide some too up and stop you decimating your savings xx

JuneTreeTop · 26/03/2020 00:30

I was going to apply for UC but I got really confused.
First question was
"Do you have a job?" Then a Yes or.No tickbox, but was i supposed to click yes or no as a supply teacher??

Second question that stumped me was asking about kids who depend on me, i clicked 'no' because my sister doesnt depend on me. But it didnt ask me about who lived in my household so at the end on the summary bit said
"Myname has 0 children depending on her and has 0 other people living in her house"
So i cancelled it because i couldnt work our how to do the people living in my house part.

Also parents are concerned, will it affect any of their benefits (mum has carers) if I claim it as i'm a non-dependent living with them and their not currently accepting rent from.me due to the coronavirus

Sorry just popping in to say childcare.co.yj popped up advertising online tutors incase that's of any interest to you? I gather it's a site you can sign up for and use to find work.

But in regards to UC
I'd put no for working. If you do find some work you can always update on UC that there is work that you're doing as you do it.

Dont include anyone else, just you as you're living independently just in the same house. When I was on Income support (dont I feel old!) I was told to disregard anyone in the house who wasnt reliant on me. Hth

YABU not making a contribution to household expenses.

Sootyandsweep2019 · 26/03/2020 08:10

It won't negatively affect any of your parents benefits. If they are recieving housing benefit or council tax reduction, it cold see these benefits increase, as you are executed to make less of a contribution to the househod whit you are a UC claimant. But no, it will have no impact on your mother's carers benefit .
