What would you do about kitchen installation now?

I'm due to have this done in a few weeks. Assuming everyone involved is still well would you go ahead? I will have the kitchen delivered in about 4 weeks, and I do have space to store it, though it would make the diner bit of my kitchen unusable if I then didn't get it installed, but that's not the end of the world obviously.

During installation the kids and I would be at home but the place is big enough we could maintain 2 metres distance throughout and by the nature of the thing we wouldn't be using the kitchen while they were working on it anyway. I'd then disinfect it thoroughly before first use. I'm likely to be wfh 4 days out of 5 and the kids won't be going out and won't need to go near the installation team. They can use their own toilet we won't need to use.

I don't want to do anything to make this situation worse but neither do I want to deny someone who probably really needs it right now the work, or on a less important note, have a room full of boxes for months on end and still have my old kitchen which is literally falling apart - not an exaggeration.

What would you do?

I have just had mine installed , it was planed almost a year ago but with different issues they were only able to do it last week ,.

I had a email at the beginning of the week to tell me all the fitters were healthy and symptom free, the fitters asked before they came in if anyone in the house hold had any symptoms.

Once they got started they were great , I chatted with a few of them and they like most of us are concerned but will carry on working , then the day they were due to finish they got a call saying they had to make the kitchen safe and usable but thats all and they were all getting pulled off all the work that day. ( same day boris shut the pubs )
Fair play to the lads doing mine they worked right through from 8 am to around 6 pm to get mine finished and was then going to help a work mate out to get someone else's done too.
They all said it was probably going to be the last time they could earn any money for quite some time .

So in short yes I would get it done just keep your distance and clean well after

Tbh, the situation is going to be so dramatically different in four weeks, I highly doubt you will have a choice about going ahead. If it was me I would just wait and see.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 22/03/2020 02:31

Events will overtake you unfortunately.

We have the same issue with our utility room. Units arrive mid-April and the builder is due to start then. I am waiting to see what will happen but suspect we will be on lockdown by then

araiwa · 22/03/2020 03:46

The government advice is social isolation unless youre doing essential home improvements so im sure youll be fine

Mintjulia · 22/03/2020 04:31

My boiler service was done yesterday. I disinfected all surfaces before man arrived, then retreated to sitting room while work was done, then disinfected surfaces including door knocker, handles etc. again after he left. No chatting, no contact.
If you can manage that, then maybe.

Toomanycats99 · 22/03/2020 04:48

Mine luckily is just finished. My concern would be what if they rip out sink cooker washing machine etc and then rules change.i did 3.4 weeks likes that and the thought of months would be horrible!

RhymingRabbit3 · 22/03/2020 07:36

Is your old kitchen usable? If so I would not have the work done. However as others have said, in 4 weeks the situation is likely to be completely different so you won't have a choice anyway

Theduchessstill · 22/03/2020 07:38

Ah yes, I hadn't thought about them getting halfway through it and then having to stop. Lockdown without a functioning kitchen would be grim. He's emailed tentatively seeing if we're still ok as I imagine he's had cancellations. Maybe I'l ask if he could do it in such a way that appliances get changed and installed on the same day so I wouldn't be without those? Fridge is free-standing and nothing's happening with that, washing machine's staying in utility and not changing at all. All that's happening is tumble dry moving next to washing machine and dish washer coming out from utility and into kitchen. He could move tumble dryer day one but that and dishwasher aren't essential for a lockdown anyway. That just leaves the cooker... I'll see what he says...

I expect it will be decided for you, but I would certainly go ahead yes!

Toomanycats99 · 22/03/2020 07:49

I still have tumble dryers to be fitted from mine and splash backs but that's not too much of an issue. My problem is my leaking kitchen roof - I was having an external extractor fitted so could not get it done until after the kitchen was completed - roofer went into isolation day before he was meant to come!

I'm hoping there is not too much rain......

snapcrap · 22/03/2020 07:59

I can't see this happening. I have a big booking for next month and will wait for them to cancel then sort out financials then (I've paid a deposit, don't want them to go under by asking for it back but maybe we can go halves).

MoltonSilver · 22/03/2020 08:21

In 4 weeks time? Not happening.

firawla · 22/03/2020 09:14

I’d be really worried about them starting and then getting in lock down so being left with it half done, on that basis I’d probably say can they wait and do it after
