Should nurses get a significant pay rise after Corona

I have been a nurse for 42 years. Now semi retired (still do the odd shift). I have never earned enough to buy my own house and have struggled financially due to low pay. I have however, loved every minute of my job even though it has taken its toll physically, socially and psychologically.
Nurses have always been undervalued by government and their pay reflects this. Government have banked on the fact that they will not strike.
Nurses are the backbone of the NHS.
We will not get through the Corona Virus without them.
Isn’t it time to recognise this fact and financially reward nurses accordingly.
Of course everybody plays an important part in the NHS and I am certainly not minimising the efforts of others but without nurses there would not be an NHS.
Operations couldn’t happen, intensive care couldn’t function, A&E couldn’t function, patients on general wards would not be bathed, dressed, fed, lifted, taken to the toilet or have their bums washed.
It’s not just general nurses of course. Other specialities including mental health nurses are also undervalued and underpaid.

In theory yes but we are going to be in a bas way financially after all rhis

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/03/2020 19:21

I think this would be an excellent time to reassess how valuable everyone is to society. Nurses, caretakers, cleaners, farmers. Won't happen thought, sorry. It'll be back to rich, powerful and famous people in no time. Even now, they are the ones getting the tests.

[bitter] from decades in housing.

foodtoorder · 21/03/2020 19:21

Wouldn't you rather have an NHS than a pay rise, cos let's face it that's the alternative.

gingganggooleywotsit · 21/03/2020 19:23

Yes they absolutely should have a payrise imho

arethereanyleftatall · 21/03/2020 19:24

In theory, of course , yes. Not sure where the money is going to come from though.

PinkiOcelot · 21/03/2020 19:25

No. This is what you signed up for. It might not be the norm (far from it) but it’s nursing nevertheless.

motherheroic · 21/03/2020 19:26

Perhaps, but they won't. Just like how everyone is quiet about burger flippers and shelf stackers. One second it's 'minimum wage, minimum effort' and 'minimum wage jobs are for teenagers' but now look how many people are depending on them.

Porcupineinwaiting · 21/03/2020 19:26

Hell yes. And should have been before the current crisis.

Curlysusie · 21/03/2020 19:26

Yes I hope so and thank you! X

itswinetime · 21/03/2020 19:26

I think everyone that has proved vital in this crisis deserves their pay to reflect that. The shop workers, delivery drivers, cleaners and yes nurses.

I also think we are going to come out of this in a bad place economically and we will end up with years more austerity and cuts. I agree with the pp the rich and famous will go back to normal and the rest of us will go back to been the silent masses that keep the cogs turning.

middleager · 21/03/2020 19:26

Absolutely.
And investment in the NHS.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/03/2020 19:28

Well under agenda for change pay is standardised so everyone would get a pay rise.

Nannyamc · 21/03/2020 19:30

All health staff are heroes.. in Ireland we have a go fund me page to feed our hospital staff..by restaurants nearby. Could the UK follow suit..it means they do not have to worry about supermarket shopping. Scary times for us all a few bob to this will not break the bank. All superheroes do not wear masks. Help them help us!!!!!!

NotAFlatEarther · 21/03/2020 19:32

Oh come on @PinkiOcelot, no one signed up to work in a pandemic which will risk their health. This is life and death.
It’s like saying to self employed people or those who have lost their jobs, well you signed up for it when you chose that job.
No one signed up for this.

wintermaiden · 21/03/2020 19:37

Yes and all the HMRC staff who will be under the cosh to sort all the financial support in the aftermath should get a pay rise as well.

They’ve been over looked for years to

WaterOffADucksCrack · 21/03/2020 19:37

May I ask people to spare a thought for carers too. Minimum wage still dealing with the pandemic plus all the usual stuff including residents with dementia who are impossible to isolate even if they did get it. Not to mention family members shouting abuse at me for telling them we can't have visitors at the moment.

It's tough for everyone. We all deserve pay rises. None of us will get one.n

wintermaiden · 21/03/2020 19:37

*too

Stompythedinosaur · 21/03/2020 19:38

No. This is what you signed up for. It might not be the norm (far from it) but it’s nursing nevertheless.

What a fucking joke, you have no idea what nurses are facing on a daily basis. None of us signed up for treating a potentially lethal illness without the required protective equipment to reduce the risk of catching it. But that is what we are dealing with, and we are doing our best. But ungrateful posts like this seriously fuck me off.

Nurses deserve a pay rise. Nursing pay is an insult and in no way reflects the work they do. We deserved a pay rise before corona. I don't imagine we will get one, though. As soon as we aren't required to sacrifice our wellbeing for the common good we will be back to the "no magic moneytree" story.

IpanemaGallina · 21/03/2020 19:39

Yes definitely should get a big pay rise but I thought that before this. FWIW I’m in a completely different overpaid industry.

LellyMcKelly · 21/03/2020 19:39

They shouldn’t be earning so little in the first place. It’s ridiculous.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/03/2020 19:39

No. This is what you signed up for. It might not be the norm (far from it) but it’s nursing nevertheless.

PinkiOcelot. I’d love to know what job you do.

Sunshine1239 · 21/03/2020 19:41

No or if so it has to be a blanket rise for all those working in difficult conditions

Eg prison officer, prison teachers, carers, drivers all still working full time on crap money and crap hours.

I8toys · 21/03/2020 19:43

I agree with Sunshine. It needs to be fair to all the others working in exceptional services.

SouthWestmom · 21/03/2020 19:44

I don't know how nursing pay works. I don't know what each Band or grade does so couldn't comment.

I also think lots of jobs are under valued by the public but not necessarily underpaid.

strawberrylipgloss · 21/03/2020 19:45

They should get a pay rise but I suspect any rise will be wiped away by the inevitable tax rises and further public service cuts that are going to be needed to pay for the pandemic.
