Am I going crazy?

This may sound really crazy but does anyone ever hear what sounds like music or mumbling coming from their washing machine, boiler or tumble dryer?! It's freaking me out. Sad

Well, it’s a metal cylinder rotating around on bearings inside a metal box so chances are it’ll be creating harmonics of some kind.

WeakAndWeary · 21/03/2020 16:42

OP in line with your previous threads I think it might be time for you to return to your GP. I mean this kindly.

bonjour16 · 21/03/2020 20:44

I'm seeing a psychiatrist but was just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar? I have been diagnosed with severe depression.

Thank you in advance.

No... I would mention this to your psychiatrist.

Heismyopendoor · 21/03/2020 23:00

No I’ve never heard anything like that.

SpillTheTeaa · 21/03/2020 23:01

No. The odd 'blub blub' from the fridge. My washing machine sounds like it's about to get up and run out the door on a spin cycle but that's it.

Stompythedinosaur · 22/03/2020 01:43

Don't freak out, but do tell your psychiatrist.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 22/03/2020 02:33

My dishwasher makes a sort of gentle pinging noise at one point in the cycle.

OP from what @WeakAndWeary has said you really need to talk to someone quickly.

EarlLeighIndamornin · 22/03/2020 03:10

I used to get this from the extractor fan in the downstairs toilet! The voices could be quite distinct but were like snatched bits of conversation. The music could be really repetitive but it was like I’d never heard it before. Both could be very unnerving and I have to say OP that this was happening at the height of my substance abuse. I’m not saying you are abusing substances of course but if you are on medication for depression it could be something to do with that?

bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 03:19

@EarlLeighIndamornin thank you. I don't take any illegal drugs. I'm worried it could be a side effect of my medication however. May I ask what substances you were abusing? Thanks again.

EarlLeighIndamornin · 22/03/2020 03:23

Alcohol, I was drinking heavily.

EarlLeighIndamornin · 22/03/2020 03:26

I forgot to say, I don’t think you’re going crazy!

bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 03:42

@EarlLeighIndamornin thank you. How much were you drinking if you don't mind me asking?

My old washing machine used to sound like monks chanting at a certain part of the cycle. I bought a new one. This one isn't haunted Grin.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 22/03/2020 03:52

They're known as auditory hallucinations. I had them a lot when depressed, and still do now from time to time.

My old counsellor told me they weren't uncommon and nothing to worry about but it would be worth mentioning to your psych to let them know.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 22/03/2020 03:55

Oh, and I don't need to have taken alcohol or tablets to hear the sounds.

I wonder if it's an aural equivalent of when people see Jesus' face in things - the brain makes sense of an input which is, in fact, nonsensical. So that on hearing random noise my brain hears a melody. Pure supposition though.

bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 03:56

@TimeIhadaNameChange thank you. May I ask what sort of things you were hearing when you were depressed? Hope you are much better now.

You posted before. You hear voices, have a Psychiatrist and a CPN and you're prescribed an anti-psychotic.

Please talk to your care team. MN is likely to give you bad advice as posters don't know your history.

bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 04:18

I'm in regular touch with my care team. I'm not necessarily asking for advice, im asking if anyone else has experienced something similar when depressed so we can share experiences and not feel alone.

OP posts:
NewYearNewJob123 · 22/03/2020 04:24

And you've already had people saying its nothing to worry about etc which isn't true.

It's a symptom of psychosis/psychotic depression and that's why you need advice and to share your concerns with people that are qualified to give appropriate advice.

If a counsellor told you that auditory hallucinations while depressed were ‘nothing to worry about’ then that counsellor is wrong, irresponsible, dangerous and should not be practicing.

Op, talk to your psych team.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/03/2020 06:26

I hear this from our bathroom extractor fan! It’s fairly new, replacing an old one, Sounds like a distorted radio station playing.

I don’t have mental health issues, or drink heavily...

bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 07:27

@ThroughThickAndThin01 thank you for sharing.

OP posts:
bonjour16 · 22/03/2020 08:01

Anyone else have experiences to share? My doctor says I don't have psychosis.
