To think actually I do need more food than usual?

And loo roll!

I've stuck to my usual shopping routine and it's becoming clear I shouldn't have.

All of a sudden I have 4 adults in the house 24/7. 3 of them eat out at lunch 5 days per week and 2 of them are rarely here for dinner, in the usual course of events.

Two are 6ft young men! The bread and cheese already....

If someone says 'No YABU stick to your usual shop' are you going to log-off and tell your household that someone on Mumsnet said "Don't buy anymore food" thus you won't adjust your shopping?

OddshoesOddsocks · 21/03/2020 14:11

Absolutely! Although the travel and eating out bills will go down, our eating in, cleaning products and electric bills are going to rocket!
Not to mention the amount I’ve spent on crafts to keep them busy and extras for dds birthday to ‘make it special’ because she can’t have her party! 😩

Hazelnutlatteplease · 21/03/2020 14:15

I forgot juice. DS needs it for medication and the ensure he drinks enough water. The limits mean we cant get enough for an average week let alone a week at home

ADreamOfGood · 21/03/2020 14:15

Yes, it's a big difference for us. DH usually works away M-F, obviously the children eat at school and I eat at work. Suddenly having to provide 4x three meals a day, plus snacks, is a bit of an increase.
Thank goodness mine aren't 6foot teenagers with huge appetites!

ADreamOfGood · 21/03/2020 14:16

There are limits on juice?

bingoitsadingo · 21/03/2020 14:21

YANBU

I normally get free breakfast at work and mostly buy lunch out near my office, and we eat out probably twice a week.

That's at least a 50% increase in my normal weekly food shop, even without stockpiling.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 21/03/2020 14:23

There are limits on juice?

Yep. Four in aldi (now threein aldi) and one in lidl. Cant even do orange and blackcurrant as they are same code

We get through two-three in a school week, three-four in a holiday week. The rest of the family has been told no juice. We have enough for a week but if we miss being able to get a online order for a week or two weeks (self isolating due to vulnerable DS) we will be out. Everyone who is going into the shop or order online who doesnt need them are trying to get hold of some for me.

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 21/03/2020 14:24

They need to only eat when they are actually hungry, not because they are bored, I had this conversation with DH when on day one of 14 day quarantine he put almost a pint of milk on his cereal and later snacked on two cereal bars and a chocolate bar. Three meals a day fine, they don't need to eat like locusts, generally I wouldn't care but these aren't usual circumstances

DoubleAction · 21/03/2020 14:25

Oh dear Vladimir, does everything have to be so serious atm?

In matters of food? Actually, yes.

ADreamOfGood · 21/03/2020 14:27

@Hazelnutlatteplease I had no idea, I just thought it was bean/pasta/rice/loo roll/Dettol etc
That must be tough, I do understand what it's like to have a child that will only eat/drink that one particular thing only.

Weregoingonanadventure · 21/03/2020 14:31

@JoshArcherStoleMyTractor

Did he listen to you though, and has he stopped eating like that?
Most people dont want to have to tell a grown adult to stop being so fucking stupid and I guess would expect the other adult to just continue doing as they please.

I had to have the chat with my 7 and 8 year olds. I just about managed to get my normal shop but I'm not going to go for my top up (usually just for salad bits). We have plenty frozen veg so I'm not going in for the salad shop mid week, but that means I wont be topping up if they eat the snacks etc. I only want to go out once a week at most. The kids totally understood and so far they've been responsible. But I wouldn't expect to have to tell a grown man.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 21/03/2020 14:32

4 adults, four times the opportunity to shop! Takeaways are still available.

Itwasntme1 · 21/03/2020 14:34

I agree, I don’t usually eat three meals a day at home, I am usually out of the house for 12 hours a day.

I haven’t been panic buying, but my weekly grocery shopping has increased, and I am buying a few extra tins each week to build up a reserve. I love Alison and am self isolating so a bit of a reserve has been essential

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 21/03/2020 14:35

@Weregoingonanadventure yes he did, he was actually quite shame faced about it. We're on day 6 now and still have plenty of supplies as long as we eat like normal people.

strawberrylipgloss · 21/03/2020 14:36

I've been needing similar amounts to Christmas. My teens normally eat at school for lunch (or are at uni) and unlike school days, they eat a leisurely breakfast.

SmudgeButt · 21/03/2020 14:36

I actually find I don't eat as much when I'm not at work so this should end up saving us money if I an WFH. At work you have that time when you think "OMG! It's lunch time. I must have a break. I must have something to eat!!!" I just don't have that happen when I'm at home.

I do however still need toilet paper.....

AmelieTaylor · 21/03/2020 14:37

Takeaways are still available.

If you’re prepared to have your food handled & coughed over by god knows who. I’m not. I’m not that keen anyway, but right now I’d have to be beyond ravenous with no other way to get food into the house.

DonkeyKong2019 · 21/03/2020 14:38

Yes I've had to increase due to having eating machines now stuck at home

RealityCheck24601 · 21/03/2020 14:44

Surely these 6ft bottomless pit teens will just have to eat a bit less? They'll have to anyway if rationing is forced.
They won't starve, they won't go hungry..they just might not be as satisfied as they'd like.

FlushedZebra · 21/03/2020 14:45

Yes - having 4 extra people at home having lunches does mean I need more bread and milk particularly.

Sparklingplasters · 21/03/2020 14:47

Yeah this hit me earlier, DS normally has school lunch Monday - Friday and dinner out twice a week, I normally lunch out Monday -Friday, so Yes I need more food supplies.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/03/2020 15:04

I have lots of stuff in and a full freezer full, however, I’m rationing. Not in the old sense where we go hungry, but by being more thoughtful about how much I cook and every scrap left in the pot/pan is reused, even if it’s added to spuds and a stock and chucked in the soup maker. Treats are finally being treated as such, instead of mindlessly grazing. Water with meals and fizzy drinks at the weekend. A lovely decent sized fry once a week, followed by a lighter lunch. We’re doing ‘TV night’ once a week, where we’ll have little bowl of treats each and a packet of crisps. One of the frozen batch cooked meal on a Sunday and a spud dinner once a week. The rest of the meals will be made from canned/dried/frozen foods. The less that I have to go into public places, such as the shops and streets, the less change I have of infecting my vulnerable adult child. If my child with SN can understand, then there is no excuse for teenagers or adults to be so selfish with foods.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/03/2020 15:08

I am hoping to get finances sorted and be able to avail of the local veg box delivery company. I was thinking about phoning the local butcher and seeing if they’re running similar. The cats are not impressed that they’re only getting half a tin of their expensive cat food between the two of them now. They don’t actually need it as they eat dried food, but it’s always been a bedtime routine, spoilt brats. 😁

JingsMahBucket · 21/03/2020 15:13

@Hazelnutlatteplease how about diluting the juice for your son and the rest of the family? I grew up doing this anyway so I’m used to it. About 30%-40% juice in the glass then fill up the rest with water. It’ll lessen the sugar intake while stretching out supplies. Your taste buds will adjust quickly. Even as an adult I can’t take more than a sip of full strength juice now. It’s way too sweet to me.
