Hi everyone,

It’s such great news for the employed that the government have promised to give us 80% of our salaries as a grant. I was laid off zero pay in the first week of March (as well as many others) and I will be asking our company to pay my wages (and other people’s through this grant in March’s wages) . The company have treated us really badly so far, and I’m just wondering if there is any reason they wouldn’t want to do this? As far as I can see it is government money, so no ‘skin off their nose’ but if it has any detrimental affect to them at all, they’ll probably say no.

So can they say no? What detrimental effect (if any) does this grant have for employers?

Yes they can just say no. It isn't compulsory for employers to claim.

There's an admin overhead in making the claim to the government. It is also contingent upon keeping jobs open - so it wouldn't suit employers like that hotel chain who just fired people and told them to get out of the staff accommodation.

It will depend if your employers are tossers I guess - some are, some aren't.
