I'm so confused and I need some help understanding, I've read through some threads but I'm still a bit confused.

I work in hospitality around 25 hours a week and with CV going on, this week only got given 6 hours and fully expecting to drop even more now that the restaurant section has been ordered to close and we are takeaway only. Obviously it has been said that we will get paid 80% if we are kept on payroll but what does this mean....

My contract states I'm 10 hours but I have always worked more (25) Does this mean I will get paid 80% of my contracted hours or of average hours worked? Because one of the girls I work with has worked 35 hours a week for the last few years and on checking her contract yesterday it says shes is only contracted 6 hours.

On Wednesday I heard that companies were letting staff go, I got worried so applied to the local supermarket for the temporary 12 week contract, they called me thursday and I had an interview yesterday afternoon In which they told me i had the job and start monday. Later on is when they ordered restaurants, bars etc to close and will pay 80%

So now I'm confused on what to do. I didnt really want to have to get another job because my anxiety is at an all time high right now and I feel safe at home, but I'm a single parent to a 2 year old and Bill's to pay. I assume that if I start this new job I wouldnt get paid from my hospitality job? If I was gettin 80% of my regular average pay from my normal job then i wouldnt go for this second job and i would stay at home with my DD and avoid catching this virus, as that would be enough money to cover what I need to pay. Because I'm very anxious about catching it.

I've called my boss but at this moment in time she isnt sure how it's all working, but I need some insight before Monday when I'm due to start this second job.

Do I just go for this second job?

My brain is fried.

Can’t you start the second job and say nothing about the first job? Just see how it goes?

DivGirl · 21/03/2020 10:47

From what I've read HMRC will be working out 80% of your PAYE earnings so it would be your worked pay, not your contracted.

I could be wrong though.

WinterCat · 21/03/2020 10:49

I think practice and custom could well come into play here. What you have historically earned is your salary and what your employer can get 80% of. It comes down to what your employer will pass on to you.

NillyFrickers · 21/03/2020 10:50

@AlwaysCheddar do you mean to the new job or?
The new job knows the situation about the current job and are fine with at as my contract is only 12 weeks but could be less could be more.
Also boss from current job phoned us on Wednesday and suggested we applied for temporary jobs as she had no hoirs to give us, that's why I applied. She said that my job is still there for when everything is back to normal.

I'd take the second job. No details on whether the 80% will apply to contracted or "usual" hours that I've seen but I heavily suspect it will be contracted hours.

Plus, it's only short term - guaranteed money coming in must be a relief if you have a little one?

whatnow40 · 21/03/2020 10:55

It will be based on your PAYE record, otherwise they would be massively failing all those on 0 hour contracts. Choice is yours really, wait a few days to find out how the 80% salary works, or take the supermarket job now. If you take the job You will be processed as an employee via PAYE and not eligible for the 80% furlough salary.

AlwaysCheddar · 21/03/2020 10:57

Take the second job. Don’t resign from the first. See what happens.

NillyFrickers · 21/03/2020 11:04

Thanks everyone for the replies.

@whatnow40 thank you, this is what my colleagues and I were also wondering if we got a new job, would we qualify for the 80% pay.

Who's going to look after your child while you work? If you have that covered, I would take the supermarket job

Amicompletelyinsane · 21/03/2020 11:08

I thought this 80 percent thing is a grant the employers can get. They'd have to pay it back though and I don't think they have to go for it. So it's more likely they will not pay you a penny.

WitchDancer · 21/03/2020 11:10

A grant is not repayable. The business loans are, but not the grants.

NillyFrickers · 21/03/2020 11:33

@WitchDancer my mum would be babysitting. Although shes telling me not to go for the second job If I'm going to receive 80%, of my pay. But she doesnt seem to understand how uncertain everything is. Lart of me feels she might not want to babysit. She is my regular babysitter in normal circumstances, 3 days a week for when I am at my regular job.

The grant would also only apply to your first job, I think. I saw an interview with someone from the CBI who said that businesses could claim for anyone who was on the books from the 29feb. So there's hope for people who have recently lost their jobs too.

In your position, i'd take the second job, it's bound to take a while for any grant earnings to come through: it sounds like there will be a huge administrative burden involved.
