To say try the tiny local shops

I fortunately have a good stock of tins and dry food etc, but Ihave read people are struggling. I went into a tiny local shop that I don’t go to often due to it closing before I get home. They have rice, pasta, noodles , soup, toilet roll, a small freezer with baked potatoes, waffles, chicken etc. They really are amazing in times like these. If you are struggling at the supermarkets maybe just pop in and see if the smaller shops have stock.

Mine is the same although the owner has said that once the stock is gone, it is gone as he is struggling to get any more stocks of things such as toilet roll from the cash & carry.

I absolutely agree. They are above all safer places to be than supermarkets. The crowding and behaviour there is crazy. I dont think its a good idea foe older people to go to them at all, even in a protected hours, and the idea of NHS staff to mix with them is madness, Our NHS staff are a high risk of infection group. Stay away from the supermarkets

I've been using my local corner shop and greengrocer for a while now.

Marieo · 21/03/2020 10:18

YABU really, for lots of people they are the only shops they can get to, especially the elderly without cars and unable to book delivery slots. Not that people should be driving around to check loads of shops, but if you can then please don't clear the shelves. I know people will say I'm unreasonable and that shops are there for everyone which they are; but be considerate. They have less buying power as well so will be less likely to get stocks in when things run short which they will.

We're so lucky where I live - we have butchers, greengrocers, bakers, fishmongers. I've been able to get most of what we need - leaving plenty of stock for others.

Marieo · 21/03/2020 10:18

Local shops greengrocers and butchers etc that are facing an uncertain future then it's great people support them.

My local corner shop has been a godsend, he is stocking up every day and delivering to the elderly self isolating and he has the best morning rolls. Proper local hero.

I've been using my local only. But it's all cash and carry. I expect my luck to run out. That said, the owner's very fair. A lady rocked up with every tin of beans and he was like, "Nah! Two tins max, lady." But then, the chippie next door gave her all their eggs (because they're neighbours). The shop had no more eggs. I have to say, I felt jealous!!! 18 eggs! For free!

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 21/03/2020 10:21

I've just been to 3 local shops and all had bread and milk in them. No meat except bacon or eggs in any of them though

Likethebattle · 21/03/2020 10:26

@Marieo mine had a sign up to be respectful and take what you need only. He will not let people clear his shelves. This is why he has stock left to go around. There was a op on here yesterday with nothing and couldn’t get any food at all.

I am wondering if they need to start distribution on density of population and number of supermarkets. There is a shortage of pasta where I am but other than that the supermarkets are ok.

Oldraver · 21/03/2020 10:44

We use our local butcher but 'little shops' are virtully non existant where I live

Neverender · 21/03/2020 11:32

At least some businesses will thrive in all this mess
