Anyone working in animal rescue centre?

I just wonder how what is happening is affecting animal rescue centres.

Has rehoming stopped?

Are new animals allowed to be admitted?

Are current animals just being kept until the crisis is over?

I don't work in one but follow a couple. They have both asked for temporary foster carers, and I have applied for that.

I wondered this. We'd been thinking of getting a cat / kitten in the summer but were planning to wait until after A levels so dd would be at home in the day for the first couple of months.

Now she's at home full time and feeling a bit lost I wondered about doing it now. But I am worried in case we can't access vets easily.

devildeepbluesea · 21/03/2020 07:10

@KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse my vets have confirmed they will stay open, skeleton service, one person only to accompany animals to appts. Might be worth asking your local vets?

BlueGheko · 21/03/2020 07:14

Our local cat rescue is still rehoming but not open to visitors as usual, appointments only, for now anyway. But yes this is going to have a huge impact on animal welfare, for owned animals too. Vets and vet nurses are not classed as key workers and many of us have children to care for, my practice already has 3 vets off and we're still being told to see routine cases.

FlyingFlamingo · 21/03/2020 07:14

My vets is open, we went yesterday - they asked people to park up, phone reception to check in and then wait to be phoned to come in. Great system I thought...until I got there and couldn’t get through so I had no choice but to go in as normal!

I thought about offering to help our local RSPCA who were looking for foster homes but I think one of my own cats would be really unhappy if I did and we don’t have a room I could shut off to keep them separate Sad

Yes, same here! Our girl would never forgive us if we fostered another cat and we have a small, fairly open-plan house.

We originally had two cats and she used to go missing every so often for days on end. When our other cat died she stopped doing this and became more happy and settled.

I was also thinking about the birds who live in the cities. They must wonder what has happened to us all.

Our little one would be fine I think, but the bigger one wasn’t happy when we brought little cat home, and she was younger then. They get on now and are usually good friends but another cat would be an upset I think. It’s a shame because there’s a beautiful male tortie on the rescue’s website who has been looking for a home for a while Sad

All have different takes at this moment in time.

A lot of rescues are run by volunteers who are in the at risk category, so this is the major problem.

I've seen a couple of do-gooders claiming to be rescues pop up at the moment. People who haven't a clue what they are doing, and what's involved, the financial backing, vets access etc.

Now is an awesome time to get a rescue pet though. Use a reputable rescue with all the associated vet checks and you will be helping to ease what will soon become a crisis! Kitten season is coming and it's going to be really hard

Oh it's is fatal to look through 'cats available' for rehoming!

OP posts:
FlyingFlamingo · 21/03/2020 07:57

I know, and I can’t stop myself!

In good news though the male tortie is no longer showing as being available so hopefully he’s got a happy home somewhere Smile

Hamsterian · 21/03/2020 08:12

I foster for an animal charity.
They are still rehoming animals, but instead of visiting whenever they are requesting you book an appointment.
It would be a great help if people can continue adopting during this time.

StrongMama1989 · 21/03/2020 08:17

Who cares!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 21/03/2020 08:17

I foster for a small cat rescue charity that is entirely foster home based, we do not have 'a centre'.

Luckily it's a quiet time of year for us but kitten season is imminent and I'm worried that cats that need help won't get it if we can't get out to pick up animals. Or we might rescue cats and kittens but rehoming is through the floor due to people's uncertain incomes and not supposed to visit homes to meet the cats.

We've already had to cancel our first fundraising event of the year so funds will suffer this year unless things get back to normal fairly quickly.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/03/2020 08:17

I adopted from the RSPCA on Thursday - the centre is no longer having open visiting its apt only and they have 1 apt an hour to reduce risk
