To ask the Government to move the school year.

Instead of September move it to Jan, solves all the missing education worries.
People have been saying for a long time they should stagger the holidays better, seems like the perfect solution to me.

To clarify - only high school pulpits November year group in May. Primary school are still August.

So the 6 week holiday would be in the middle of winter? No thanks.

I think the government may just be a bit busy to give this any headspace at the moment.

Actually I'm not sure they are. It is part of government's duty to educate the young. I do not believe that they should have shut down schools in such a cavalier fashion without having lots of public advice available in an easily accessible public platform about educating from home.

What else is all this about if not to give us all a future? That includes kids' education.

Clearly contingency planning has not been happening, despite all the public warnings that have been available about a pandemic happening at some point. What do we pay these politicians for??

I'm happy because I've just figured out what I'm doing with my two for the next few weeks. Hopefully the most vulnerable kids will be in school with proper teachers. Not everyone has access to VLEs, no one was ready for this. When schools do re-open this is going to be a nightmare of kids all at different stages.

But no, I don't think moving the school year permanently is going to be a good idea at this point. Maybe as a temporary measure, certainly for the exam groups?? Those of us fortunate enough to have more time to play with will have to make use of it.

I'm sure there are ways of arranging the holidays to avoid 6 weeks off in winter. It might be possible to stagger them across the summer.

Aworldofmyown · 21/03/2020 13:13

I don't think it's a priority, no. But I hope that some serious conversations will happen.

Of course I'm not suggesting that they move all the holidays to winter, there really is no need for 6 whole weeks in the summer. How about 4?

People on here are always saying that children start school to early, this way they would start 5 months later.

Oh yeah... simple .... ffs.... really?

StripyHorse · 21/03/2020 15:56

Surely if the school year changed so would the cut off? So instead of 31 August pupils being the youngest, the 31 December ones would? How does that help?

Jerseygaly · 21/03/2020 16:26

I honestly dont think it's necessary for most year groups, certainly in primary.
Possibly some secondary kids should be able to retake.
Eg eyfs is assessed in may anyway so not that much difference. They could just remove the writing bit for this year.
PSC kids should easily be able to pass by this point in yr 1.
Maybe relax the class sizes a little to allow some kids probably the youngest to retake.
Even if you are WFH there would be enough time to help at the weekends to keep kids on top of the work. The curriculum is available.

Might be the right catalyst to get them to think about spreading the 6-8 week Summer holiday into a smaller one?
