Barclaycard scam email warning

vitavita · 20/03/2020 17:53

I just got an email from barclaycard with my first name and the last four digits of a card number, it was all about what they are doing to help customers during the corona virus outbreak and contained a link to view the full message online.

I don't have, and have never had, a Barclay card.

The Barclays one doesn’t have any links in it btw. Other than about cookies on the website.

Send any phishing attempts to [email protected]

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 20/03/2020 23:50

I got the same. I am a barclaycard customer. It had my first name and the correct last 4 digits of my credit card. It came from [email protected]

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 21/03/2020 00:18

Yup, I've got the barclaycard@emails... Email as well. My first thought was more about if you didn't actually pay for 3 months then paid just before the 90 day limit would that count as late payment so no charges or would it be non-payment.

Boireannachlaidir · 21/03/2020 01:10

What's your AIBU then if you're adamant you don't have an account with them & it couldn't possibly be someone else that had set one up using your email address? Confused

Listen to @ButtWormHole

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 21/03/2020 01:36

I got one too, despite having a zero balance for the last 5 years or so.

vitavita · 21/03/2020 03:34

I was trying to be helpful to others by warning them, I won't bother again seeing as some of you have given me a hard time.

DidoLamenting · 21/03/2020 03:46

[email protected]

That does not look like a genuine address.

I'm a solicitor. We have lethal anti- virus , spam detector etc. but the IT dept. has reported a real spike in spam /phishing and emails being sent from hacked e- mail accounts this week. Most are still being caught but some are getting through the firewall.

vitavita · 21/03/2020 04:43

checked the email address [email protected]

Had similar yesterday from HSBC, help, virus, etc. Binned without opening. Expect lots from all sorts, especially HMRC cons.

dementedpixie · 21/03/2020 09:28

I wouldn't click on any links in an email or text either. The scam emails will look very similar to genuine ones so it's not worth the risk

MissBarbary · 21/03/2020 09:36

vitavita

You got some really rude responses on here. It is far more likely the email you got was a scam than someone used your email to set up a fake account.

countrygirl99 · 21/03/2020 10:01

vitavita do people really think that just because there may be a genuine Barclays email that scammers are capable of copying and pasting? And that there aren't hacked lists of email addresses sold on the dark web? Scammers have taken advantage of Covid to increase their activity. The things that make people most susceptible to scams are fear and greed. Both of which are very evident at the moment.

lollipoplady1 · 21/03/2020 10:35

OP posted on here and wanted a response, the responses received were obviously not the ones they wanted. People are entitled to answer your questions. Whats the problem?

TerrorWig · 21/03/2020 11:19

SEND ANY YOU THINK ARE PHISHING TO [email protected]

SEE THIS PAGE FOR MORE INFO www.barclays.co.uk/help/security-fraud/email-details/

Yes it could be identity fraud but it’s probably just a phishing attempt. Ignore, delete, or send to the bank. We can’t stop it from happening

I know you’ve got no proof that I’m an employee but PLEASE at least read the attached link!

TerrorWig · 21/03/2020 11:24

@vitavita you are right to be cautious, fraudsters will take advantage of crises.

Your bank (or even not your bank, but sent mistakenly) won’t include any links to any secure sites within an email. They’ll ask you to go there yourself. There is extremely strict legal criteria around that.

PITANotBread · 23/01/2022 13:22

Had a similar email and found this thread.
A good check is to take everything after the @ sign, copy and paste it into a web browser.

If it returns a proper web page then it’s possibly a valid email address.

Not a foolproof approach but a good indicator.

Doggydreaming · 23/01/2022 13:48

Did u evever have a credit card with mint? They were acquired by Barclaycard many years ago and all accounts were switched over to them. Have u checked your info on credit karma?

AuntyBumBum · 25/01/2022 00:11

Lots of scams about.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 25/01/2022 00:26

Scammers are fast and clever.

They’ve created a spoofed version of the legit email, with the addition of a link to their own website which will ask you to ‘confirm’ your details, following which they will empty your account.

Barclays customers who have the email without the link - yours are legit.

Anyone who has one with the link is likely to have received a very plausible phishing attempt.

CounsellorTroi · 25/01/2022 00:31

I have got a Barclays current account and a Barclaycard but have not received the email.

TameDucksAtChatsworth · 25/01/2022 02:11

This is a ZOMBIE thread

You can safely stop expecting one now as this thread is nearly 2 years old Grin

If you don’t and never have banked with them, then a bell should ring in your head,THIS IS A SCAM ,!!! Just delete it. NO PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATION WILL EVER DO THIS, how many times does this need to be said

However many times it is said it is not good advice unfortunately. It's quite possible that any email is genuinely from Barclays. A fraudulent account could have been opened by someone else using the recipient's name. In which case ignoring the situation is not a good idea.
