To wonder what anti vaxxers gain from their beliefs?

So it's started on FB. Some vocal anti vaxxers saying how Corona is a hoax to get us all vaccinated.....to put money in the pockeys of big pharma.
I will probably have to block them as i gave the rage.
They should thank their lucky stars they weren't around during the time of the black death when 20 million plus died globally. I bet those people would have prayed for big pharma back then.

Grrr...plus some of these anti vax people don't have kids to vaccinate anyway.

One of my friends was an anti-vacciner - her youngest son got mumps as a young man and is now sterile

malificent7 · 20/03/2020 17:40

Did she give a reason why she was anti vax?

a feeling of control in a scary world

a sense of belonging - there's a tightly defined "Us" as opposed to the massive block of "Them"

a hint of Being Special - I can see this whereas the sheeple can't

It's all very human desires, and completely understandable. Which is why it's so hard to combat.

Darwinism in action, woman’s son is now sterile.

How weird! A significant number of posters agree with the anti-vaxxers.
Their stupidity and ignorance is without limits.

june2007 · 20/03/2020 18:08

First you assuming that all antivaxers do it for the same reason.
Second just because your anti one vax doesn,t mean your anti them all.
Thirdly was she being seriouse.

I assess each vax in turn looking at side effects. Seriouseness of illness and likely hood of getting it, side effects of illness ect.

'Darwinism in action, woman’s son is now sterile'

She wasn't/ isn't though

He didn't make that choice

Visiting the sins of the parents on the children is a bit out of date!

They really think their ‘research’ (looking on Google) is equivalent to the research that qualified professional scientists and doctors do. They are conspiracy-minded and enjoy thinking they know something that is ‘hidden’ or ‘secret’ even though in reality, they understand very little about it. They enjoy feeling special. They put their children and other people at risk because of the good feelings they get from the above.

More vaccine for the rest of us. Bet they will be screaming for the COVID-19 vaccine if/when. No time for the tinfoil crackpot brigade at the best of times.

calmama · 20/03/2020 18:17

I’ve heard various reasons people have chosen not to vaccinate. My favourite was “I’ve done three months of research into this and I can confidently say I now know more than ALL the doctors about vaccinations. They actually do more harm than good and any parent who blindly gives their kids vaccinations without doing their research is neglectful, calmama.”

Extraordinary.

malificent7 · 20/03/2020 18:29

They will not be queing up...apparently the media have exaggerated this as an excuse to bring in compulsory vaccinations.

It's not people who believe this crap that are gaining from it - it's "big alternative health" - ironically, as they peddle fear about "big pharma" in order to turn people away from mainstream medicine and towards their products/services. It's not just vaccines, although that's an easy one because they hijack the completely natural anxiety many parents have about seeing their perfectly well, healthy child be jabbed painfully with a needle. It's a bit harder to steer people away from other health things because we can logically and instinctively see the benefit of medicine/procedures that are making a visibly ill/injured person well again. Vaccination is tricky for us to instinctively accept because it's something we do when we're healthy in order to protect us from becoming unhealthy, but the effect of it isn't visible or obvious and the method of delivery isn't very pleasant. In times like now where the overall rate of things like measles and diphtheria is very low as well we don't even have a constant/visible/accessible reminder of exactly what we're protecting against. So it's fairly easy to tell people that vaccines don't work, that the diseases they protect against aren't harmful, and that the vaccine itself has the potential to harm your child. The only thing that goes against this is the word of medical experts etc, there's nothing you can really physically see and touch and trust. It comes down to which body you trust more - the body of international health researchers etc or a body of people on the internet who claim to have had bad experiences with vaccines.

Antivaxxers as in people who believe in the theories are just scared. They're not gaining anything as such it's just the version of events which makes the most sense to them. Although I do have a theory if you're needle phobic you'll tend to lean more towards it because if you REALLY don't want to take your child for injections and somebody is whispering in your ear "You don't need to, you know!" you're probably more likely to listen to them because secretly you are looking for a loophole that would allow you not to subject your child to something you find really frightening and/or painful.
