Can an EBF baby be over fed?

Just that really, I have a 5 and half month old baby. One of my mothers friends saw a photo of him and he is chunky and does have "rolls". She said "have they not had a word with you about his weight? I'd be worried if I was you".

He is on the top of the chart, but what can I do? I don't think I need to do anything but it's upset me (PFB!).

I intend to start solids next month.

The answer is nope. Feed away. Rolls are fab at this age? When he starts crawling/walking he’ll use up all of that excess. Babies need excess. If he got poorly he’d use that to survive. It’s normal. Chubby babies are fab babies. Mine had a big podgy tummy. It used to roll over his nappy. Years later he’s like a beanpole! He was formula fed too so take no notice of all other peoples opinions. Just enjoy your baby. If he’s meeting all his milestones and is well fed and happy then we’ll done you. Carry on. Next time somebody offers an “opinion” just turn round and blow a long drawn out raspberry. Keep doing that. They’ll soon learn to keep their opinions to themselves.

Yes you can overfeed an EBF baby.

When dd was a baby, I was continually told by fellow mums and by health professionals that you couldn't. However, dd used to wake up in the night, comfort feed to get back to sleep (we coslept and I was too knackered and inexperienced to know the difference between a proper night feed when she was hungry and a comfort feed).

She turned into a right little fatty. Looking at the photos niw, I can't believe how huge she was but it crept up gradually so I didn't realise at the time.

The weight didn't start dropping off until she slept through the night.

@1066vegan Can’t believe you’ve called your side a “right little fatty”. Comfort feeding is just as important as a “proper” feed.

Babies go up and down. My twins were tiny at birth (3.5 and 4.5lb). They were very low on the weight chart. DT1 went up to almost 50th centile for weight about that age, once he started crawling and then walking he went back down - they’re 3 now and both 9th centile for weight, 2nd for height. They both eat for England but they never stop moving.

But she was a little fatty!

She's 17 and pretty average weight now. Even when she's been a little bit overweight (not keen on exercise and went through a phase of buying too many snacks when she went to secondary school and discovered the delights if being able to spend pocket money without an adult seeing what you're buying), I've never commented on her weight to her and in front of her.

But she will be the first to admit that she was a huge baby, laughs at some of the photos and has asked how I let her get so big.

Don’t worry, what a ridiculous comment. Best to have a bit of extra chunk in reserve if he gets a cold etc and loses his appetite
