AIBU Mazda dealership trying to capitalise on Coronavirus misery

My DH has just had an email from our local Mazda dealership offering a 'Vehicle Air-Con Sanitiser Clean' for only £24.95. It kills "a range of bacteria and germs".

AUBU in thinking this is a bit more than a coincidence that this is being plugged when the CV scare is here?

Obviously it can do nothing to help with CV as that is a virus and not bacteria but some anxious and/or vulnerable people may be misled by this. It doesn't even say what bacteria or % age of known germs it kills.

That’s literally how all marketing works.

elessar · 20/03/2020 12:27

I voted YABU.

Businesses all over are being catastrophically hit right now. Provided they are not making any kind of false claims or insinuations, then no, I cannot blame them for trying to make revenue on something.

They aren't cashing in - more than likely trying to keep some form of income so they don't have to lay off staff.

YABU I work in the motor trade and this is a popular service to promote.

isabellerossignol · 20/03/2020 12:37

Sounds like a bog standard marketing email to me. It doesn't mention coronavirus so it's not cashing on that.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 20/03/2020 12:57

It may not mention CoronaVirus but the 'coincidence' astounds me.

We gave never been offered it before in all the years we have had Mazda cars.

  • have (not gave). Oops.

I don’t think anyone is going to be rushing out to buy a new car any time soon so you can’t blame them for trying to make some money while they still can.

annamie · 20/03/2020 13:04

YABU for nitpicking. I’m guessing you have a nice secure job OP?

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 20/03/2020 13:10

They'd have to sell about 1200 Air-Con cleans to equal the cost of a Mazda 6 so they'd have to sell quite a few thousand Air-Con cleans each week to manage to stay open.

Then you'd guess wrong.

My local Mercedes garage offers this every spring, it's a good idea.

LaurieMarlow · 20/03/2020 13:22

Any business I know is trying to do literally anything to stay afloat right now. YABU.

Don’t buy it if you don’t want to.

HindsightIs2020 · 20/03/2020 13:24

I was offered this in 2017. It's not a new thing.

shinyredbus · 20/03/2020 13:25

Well - if you don’t want it, surely then just don’t buy it?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2020 13:26

Thats what they always put in air con service descriptions

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 20/03/2020 13:27

We get one every spring from a dealership. It’s to make sure you have it done before Turing the AC on after it being out of use for a few months.

SapphireSalute · 20/03/2020 13:29

its nothing new op

what a pointless post in such uncertain times!

TerryScottsBridge · 20/03/2020 13:36

Yes, because the profit margin in a poor car is 100%.

They'll make more from the air con than a new car. Most new cars are sold at cost in volume dealers.

Ginisatonic · 20/03/2020 13:39

It’s a perfectly normal thing to be offered at this time of year.

Inaquandry19 · 20/03/2020 13:43

Local businesses are diversifying such as pubs selling takeaway food. Is this cashing in? No. Neither is that, just a business trying to survive. The ones that are deplorable are the ones selling pasta and toilet roll for a tenner.

Then maybe worry about that.

species5618 · 20/03/2020 14:56

Air Con should actually be used all year round. Keeps the seals from hardening
You quite often find after a period of A/C inactivity you turn it on and it smells. That's where the bacteria has built up.
You can get a cleaner kit on Amazon for about £12 and do it yourself so £25 from a garage is not too bad a price.
