To be really worried about spot on DD's scalp?

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 10:23

She is 10. She said a few weeks ago she had a sore spot on her head. It was really tender and hurt when I brushed her hair. It started as just a small lump, not particularly red and no head on it. It's at the front of her head near her parting.

It eventually scabbed over. It's just a small lump now, no scab and doesn't hurt anymore but she has a small bald area around it.

So it seems to be healing but it's taking such a long time. And why has it caused a bald area?

She's a red head so yes I'm being really paranoid and worrying about skin cancer. She always wears a hat in the sun and spf. Never been sunburnt or anything but there have been times her head has
been exposed when swimming in the sea etc.
Also feeling more anxious as I wouldn't be able to see a doctor about it with the current situation.

Any ideas?

.....and sorry if this seems trivial - I do appreciate people have far bigger health worries at the moment.

Could something have bitten her? Spider ant or mosquito bite?

Trying81 · 20/03/2020 15:50

I’m having a basal cell carcinoma removed next week

Keep an eye on it, take pictures (the app miiskin is good) and if it’s not better soon or keeps bleeding then crusting see the GP, assuming they’re taking appointments

Trying81 · 20/03/2020 15:50

Additionally, it’s rare in children so unlikely but always good to be aware of these things

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 16:21

I suppose something could have bitten her?

@Trying81 - that's freaked me out a bit!!

OP posts:
Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 16:23

When it appeared, it was a lot, lot sorer than it looked - she would flinch if I even touched it really lightly.

Trying81 · 20/03/2020 16:27

Don’t be freaked out, I had mine for years and hadn’t really noticed it - a BCC can’t kill you or spread but it is best to remove them. Mine isn’t painful though

It’s unusual at my age (38) apparently let alone at hers - don’t worry

picklemewalnuts · 20/03/2020 16:31

Are you in the U.K.?
If so, At that age, she's very unlikely to have had enough sun exposure to cause problems.

It's probably something really boring, and the bald patch could just be the result of the swelling. See what it does, and get it looked at if it doesn't resolve. Could be fungal, or ringworm for example,

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 20/03/2020 16:32

Does she pick? I have several such spots on my scalp that I cannot leave alone. It's a stress/anxiety thing and it does cause small bald patches due to being messed with so much. Mine take up to a year to heal if I cant stop pulling the scab off.

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 16:39

She's really not a picker at all and didn't touch it when it was scabby as it was so sore. Now there's nothing there to pick. I was hoping it was some sort of minor hair follicle infection/blockage, but I thought if it was that it would probably have had a head on it, like a spot? This is more just a lump.

OP posts:
Herja · 20/03/2020 16:40

Could it be a little cyst? They can be small on the head, very sore if infected and would scab up if picked at, but not go...

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 16:43

@Herja - maybe...I really don't know!

OP posts:
LellyMcKelly · 20/03/2020 16:45

My first thought was a cyst too. Why not pop along to your local pharmacist to take a look at it. They’ll be able to tell you if you need to get it seen by a GP or whether there’s some sort of poultice or cream to help get rid of it.

LefttoherownDevizes · 20/03/2020 16:48

Umm have you googled scalp ringworm? That can cause a bald patch . . .

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 17:05

Will google scalp ringworm and go to chemist - thank you!

OP posts:
Goneroundthetwist · 20/03/2020 18:05

Shingles?

Tink2007 · 20/03/2020 18:09

Possibly ringworm or maybe a wart?

Tunnocks34 · 20/03/2020 18:10

I has psoriasis on my scalp which can sometimes form a lump.

user1471506482 · 20/03/2020 18:38

My daughter has had this exact same issue lately and she's also a red head, how odd! I never did get to the bottom of it but it's much better now.

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 18:48

Did your daughter get the smooth bald area around it?

OP posts:
user1471506482 · 20/03/2020 19:09

This is what it currently looks like. It's around 6-8 weeks since it started and she said it's still sore but not as bad.

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 19:22

Hmmm, my DD's was not as red and there was only one.

OP posts:
Royallyscrewed · 20/03/2020 19:26

Maybe folliculitis or something fungal?

Puddingfordinner · 20/03/2020 19:35

Just had another look - actually it does look quite similar. She says the same - still sore but not as bad

When my daughter caught chicken pox, her first spot was in a similar place. Chicken pox is doing the rounds, it is possible to get it again very mildy.
