To feel sorry for Matt Hancock on Question Time

I'm no fan of this government, far from it. But I felt really sorry for Matt Hancock on QT tonight. He looked utterly wiped out. I can't imagine how awful it must be to be in his position right now. The burden of responsibility must be huge, and unlike Boris, he looks like he actually gives a shit.

Give over. He is happy to take the money, he is content to take the job.

That is what people say to nurses who really will deliver this.

This government will be defined by this. Matt Hancock is responsible for handling these events. It’s not all about blarting on in Parliament.

Some of our politicians seem to think they make events happen and can control everything. They found out they are wrong.

Haven’t seen QT tonight so can’t comment on that but every other interview I have seen of his this week, he has come across inept and like a rabbit caught in headlights.

I get that he must be working off air by now but I would expect a senior Cabinet official to have a bit of confidence about him to give us confidence in what he and his department are doing.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2020 23:39

"unlike Boris, he looks like he actually gives a shit"

Yep, Hancock knows enough to fear what's coming, but he's out of his depth wrt capability
Must have originally thought being Health Secretary was a handy career move - it's not that demanding normally

Now the responsibility for what happens may haunt him for the rest of his life

Never thought I'd miss Jeremy Hunt, but imo he would have a much better grip

  • and he looks shit scared too

Rabbit in the headlights is exactly what he looks like. He's way out of his depth. I guess that's why I feel sorry for him. I agree that he doesn't have the experience or capability to deal with this, and I reckon he knows it.

I don't think anyone in the world, whether layman or nurse or doctor or professor, is "in their depth" when it comes to this.

I'd feel sorry for any health secretary landed with such a catastrophic event such as this.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/03/2020 23:49

I thought he looked quite perky! He’s also got one of those faces that’s transformed when he smiles.

He’s doing his job. But I feel for anyone making decisions at this time, on a basic human level. He doesn’t have the option to fall apart like a lot of other people are doing, he’s got to just get on with it and that must be exhausting but he looks like he’s alright at the moment. Apparently spent the day shopping for tests so let’s hope that works out.

Medievalist · 19/03/2020 23:53

Apparently spent the day shopping for tests so let’s hope that works out.

Yes that was an unfortunate phrase and conjures up an image of him browsing on Amazon.
You would hope his role was more strategic wouldn't you?

DippyAvocado · 19/03/2020 23:54

Matt Hancock has always been the Tory whipping boy. They would wheel him out to do every Brexit interview.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/03/2020 23:58

Browsing on amazon or armed with a giant shopping bag. Weird how they keep referring to it as being “like a pregnancy test”. I was wondering how it work by POAS but he clarified it’s a finger prick blood test. Surely only given to people who think they’ve had symptoms? Hard to know.

Sorry for derail.

I sent him a link on of ventilators for sale on eBay as he's been begging. I felt embarrassed the other night when he was begging for ventilators on the news.

What an absolute fuck up!! Oh look, we have less ventilators per head of population than every other country in Europe. It's like last weekend someone suddenly realised how few we had!!

Twats! They know we will be as bad as Italy at the very least. He s shitting it cos he knows it will all fall on his head.

EstuaryBird · 20/03/2020 00:04

He’s been told to toe the party line and no doubt has DC breathing down his neck but I think a couple of times tonight it showed that he does not personally agree.

Same with BJ today. He had no conviction in what he was saying and didn’t seem to want to be there.

Pixxie7 · 20/03/2020 00:12

If he can’t take the heat, he can resign still get paid a massive salary. In the mean time billions are relying him to be honest, that’s all everyone wants. They spoke to one of the only companies who produce ventilators, he said the government hasn’t placed an order yet.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/03/2020 00:45

No. I don’t feel sorry for this weasel one bit. They all thought this was a cushy number lots of champagne and celebrations, bullshitting and lipservice to the gen pop. But now realise there’s work to be done.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/03/2020 00:52

MH is a toad. He's unpopular in the workplace and underestimates the responsibility that comes with the job title. But anyone in this position would be winging its although I have no sympathy (he was desperate for a role like this) I don't think anyone would feel comfortable doing that job right now.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 20/03/2020 01:20

Ex-NHS here (non clinical) - I never thought the day would come when I'd be missing Jeremy Hunt.

All of them took those jobs in a time of jam. Now they're actually having to do something for their money their true colours are very, very apparent. Makes you wonder why we have them, really, doesn't it, or at least why we have quite so many.
