To think this might be worth asking? Toilet roll related

Like other schools, ds’s school is closing tomorrow. Would it be unethical/stupid/impractical to ask school if they could somehow distribute their toilet roll supplies?

And perhaps other supplies too, eg perishable food stuffs. Not sure how it could be fairly administrated but no point all the supplies just sitting there surely?

You are kidding aren't you? Surely you know how stretched school budgets are?

Intelinside57 · 19/03/2020 18:11

Apart from the fact that, at least in secondary schools, the pupils have been nicking toilet rolls so they're losing money to that already...

mrscatalano · 19/03/2020 18:12

Schools aren't completely closing or will be co-ordinating to provide cover for vulnerable children and children of key workers.

I'm sure they'll do something about any perishables they won't use.

BonnesVacances · 19/03/2020 18:13

Are they not open next week for key workers' children etc?

Sirzy · 19/03/2020 18:13

If things are perishable it makes sense to but together packs for vulnerable families but by the end of tomorrow most schools won’t know for certain what use they will have in coming weeks so giving away everything makes no sense

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 19/03/2020 18:14

And what about the pupils and teachers who will still be in?

BlueJava · 19/03/2020 18:14

I think YABVU, you need to donate to them, not the other way round!

Iooselipssinkships · 19/03/2020 18:25

That's ridiculous, some children will still be at school too so of course need toilet roll and food.

Tillet · 19/03/2020 18:26

It was just a thought. I know that most schools in this area are closing completely, and I wasn’t suggesting the toilet rolls or perishables were given to me or families like ours who are not in dire need. I thought some sort of plan to distribute to those in need would be good but, as I said, I didn’t know if it could be done sensibly, fairly and in a timely way.

Our budgets are pared to the bone. Toilet rolls (we use big centre feed tools in dispensers) will keep until we fully re open. The only perishable food owned by the school are teabags, milk and coffee ... in fact they are owned by the staff who pay into the tea fund. Food items in the kitchen are actually owned by the external catering company. Those things will probably be absorbed back by them and re distributed in the amounts needed to schools providing childcare.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 19/03/2020 19:56

Are you out of toilet paper?

CatBatCat · 19/03/2020 20:08

Oh. Ffs.

AhoyMrBeaver · 19/03/2020 20:10

My kids' school had asked that the girls take the free sanitary products home tomorrow.

heartsonacake · 19/03/2020 20:11

YABVU. Do you realise how stretched school budgets are?

purplecorkheart · 19/03/2020 20:12

The toilet rolls will still be there when the school opens. Perishable food will be hard to distribute to many peope, maybe to a local carehome, I read some are struggling to get food supplies otherwise maybe to a foodbank etc. It would be very difficult to distribute within the school population.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2020 20:13

Eh? No, of course not
Our PTA gave the school an extra £500 last week to pay for all the tissues and soap they needed
School budgets are really tight

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/03/2020 20:16

Our school have sent a message today stating that they are emptying out the canteen supplies tomorrow and donating them to a local charity (it’s a homeless charity that will make and distribute meals to the homeless in the city). They already sent the questionnaire re key workers children, so presumably know how much they need to keep and probably will be keeping non-perishables for the coming weeks or future use.

Could you purchase an over the loo bidet if you want a clean bum? www.coopersofstortford.co.uk/portable-bidet-bowl/

You need this:

You realise toilet rolls are not perishable OP, kids and teachers will need to wipe their arses when they go back to school, they are not closed permanently. As is stands i believe schools are being asked to operate a skeleton staff , and are asking for volunteers to keep the teaching and school operations going for the children of keyworkers etc, they are not just leaving them empty to wither away to nature.

School meals are provided by external companies anyway no? Are you worrying for their sources of income now none of them have children to provide meals for. YANBU to be concerned generally and want the best for others OP but things are not black and white, you cannot just' give' inventory over, taking it or removing it would be theft.

I live behind a supermarket, and they are up all night, i can hear them and see them loading deliveries in now, last night they were until 3AM, kept all of us up ( not going to complain obviously). Convenience retail mostly get daily deliveries. WHEN people calm down, and this initial phase of panic passes into acceptance, there will be plenty available

Crunchymum · 19/03/2020 20:21

I actually don't think its the worst idea. Initially I was thinking things like sanitary towels and loo roll will still be useable when kids go back but of course the supply chain will be bette then too? Why not give to those who need it now??
.

However I cannot imagine how it would work logistically and guess it would create extra work for staff.

Crunchymum · 19/03/2020 20:22

@dontgobaconmyheart

How much longer for acceptance? I'm starting to get a bit concerned now!!!

Malvinaa81 · 19/03/2020 20:23

Please cease being so ridiculous.

Amen to that!
