Shamelessly posting for traffic - foodbanks are asking for cash donations

Already posted in the Coronavirus topic, but putting it to a wider audience.

Because the panic buyers want to hang on to everything they could get their mitts on, and as a result the supermarkets are now having to ration purchases so most people need what they can buy for their own families, the foodbanks are inevitably suffering - and therefore so too are the most vulnerable, especially now when children are going to be at home.

So foodbanks are now asking for more cash donations instead of food, so that they can go out and buy supplies themselves. I know many people are worried about their own financial futures and won't feel able to donate and that's fine, but if you can spare a bit, please go to your local foodbank's website and donate. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this. Food banks are really struggling.

SquishySquirmy · 19/03/2020 15:12

Thanks.
I am self isolating at home due to a mild temperature, and feeling frustrated that I can't help at all so this is something I can do without leaving the house and infecting others!

Have just donated to my local foodbank with Paypal, thanks for the nudge, it only took seconds.

I joined the local Mutual Aid FB group but it's turned into a bit of a bunfight with people squabbling about politics and plastic, much talk of growing salad on windowsills and offers of limitless breastmilk for starving babies.

Apart from dropping our phone no into some nearby houses I think I'll try and help more via the foodbank instead.

Already done on Tuesday, thank you for the thread. Perhaps the celebrities and millionaires/billionaires could spare a few bob for their local foodbank too...

Thank you - it has been really helpful for us to get our local supermarkets to order in an extra box of supplies that are running low. We couldn't do that without cash donations.

I have another plea... you know when you are emptying out your cupboards to make room for the extra food can you check the BBE dates before putting them into the food bank boxes. I spent all afternoon checking dates & disposing of the out of date goods - about 30% of the donations. I know people will wonder why we can't use it - as a person who has a choice you can take that chance or not as you see fit, but if you only have a packet of out of date food you have to risk it.

Oh i did this earlier

Very well done for starting a thread about it OP

I didn’t want to donate stuff as i was afraid someone would yell at me for stockpiling...felt much safer giving money Grin

I didn’t want to donate stuff as i was afraid someone would yell at me for stockpiling

I had the same thought, then wondered if I could speak to someone in the shop and they could watch me put it in the foodbank basket.

But then - and it's terrible I had to feel this way - given the way some shoppers are behaving, including taking things out of other people's trolleys I seriously feared that some selfish sod would help themselves. If the foodbanks can buy supplies and take them straight out of the store, that strikes me as much safer.

This too. The last time I was in a supermarket and looked in the foodbank collection basket, I was horrified by the state of what little was in there. Ripped packets and boxes that had obviously been at the back of someone's cupboard for years. I have to admit, I wondered if the donor was feeling very smug at their 'charity', and if they were one of the ones buying 12 multipacks of nine loo rolls.
