Annual leave and self isolating.

LifeIsAPotato · 19/03/2020 07:23

I've just finished mat leave and taking all my annual leave before returning to work, my DD has had a temperature and been unwell since Tuesday with temperature so we've had to go into self isolation mode :(

Would it be unreasonable to inform work (NHS) of this so it could be transformed into sick leave or whatever they are calling it.

I feel a bit guilty asking, because there are much bigger issues, however, it will add a couple of weeks to my time off which will reduce my childcare bills a bit.

What would you do, No YABU, don't ask. Yes, you are entitled to, YANBU.

Thanks

I would say no, but mostly because friends who work in NHS are already so stretched because of colleagues being off that they could do with the help. I appreciate it will cost you, however you had already expected that cost to begin from that time (unless misunderstand)

Is your childcare staying open?

LifeIsAPotato · 19/03/2020 07:54

No childcare in place yet (due to return mid May). It's DD2 who's been unwell, Dd3 is teething and DD1 is already bored being at home :( They will all go to the same childminder when I return so settling for DD3 was planned for after Easter.

Everything could look much different then, that's why I'm so torn.

If you are self isolating you are entitled to sick leave- I’d ask.

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 20/03/2020 05:35

DH is on annual leave this week, we are isolating due to symptoms, he's not going to ask for his leave back, I'm working from home as are colleagues who are isolating, he's not (well he's doing his uni work as he has post grad deadlines next week) do you really need to?

littleblackno · 20/03/2020 05:41

You could do, but you have to be aware, if you become Ill or need to go sick again this could put you on stage one sickness.
I'm not sure how this is going to be managed as there will be ALOT of people in this. But something to bear in mind maybe?

Charliebigpotatoes · 20/03/2020 05:59

My work has said that anyone on AL but having to self isolate can go sick and claim their AL back. They've also said it is excluded from the attendance management policy so it's worth asking. We just have to make sure the sick leave is recorded as covid19 related.

Miraclelover · 20/03/2020 06:42

I wouldn’t.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/03/2020 06:45

Im nhs and a lot of us have had to cancel annual leave to compensate for the staff off sick.

tealandteal · 20/03/2020 07:10

If you can cancel your annual leave and be off sick instead, I would say you are unlikely to be able to take the annual leave when you are due to go back. Annual leave is granted by the employer and at the moment my NHS employer has a blanket ban on new annual leave bookings. So you would return to work with more annual leave entitlement but would most likely be unable to use any of it until later in the year.

Bairnsmum05 · 20/03/2020 07:25

I work for NHS and if you are off looking after someone with suspected symptoms it does not go down as sick leave. Some of my staff are isolating due to this and I am giving special leave.

NewYearNewJob123 · 20/03/2020 07:42

I'd think you were massively taking the piss if I was your manager. You said yourself you just want to add more time off.

Bairnsmum05 · 20/03/2020 07:52

In addition to my comment above, if you are off to care for a child and in isolation if want to know so your absence can be recorded correctly. However taking time off just to save child care costs is immoral.

chinateapot · 20/03/2020 07:54

Would you go straight back to work after the self isolation has finished? If yes then fair enough. It would feel a bit cheeky if you were then going to return to being on annual leave for another few weeks.

That doesn’t mean you can’t though - that’s a question for your HR department

PurpleDaisies · 20/03/2020 07:55

Is this really important now?

reluctantbrit · 20/03/2020 07:55

I wouldn't do it. It may be difficult to get AL at other times and services may still be stretched for a long time.

I added AL to my maternity leave and DD got sick from nursery bugs, I could have claimed paid dependent leave but even an extra week AL would have made it difficult for the rest of the team.

earlydaysblue · 20/03/2020 08:10

My feeling is that it will be all hands on deck later this year in order for businesses to have the best chance of recovering.
Personally if you value your job, I'd just leave it.

Sparticuscaticus · 20/03/2020 09:54

I am on AL and self isolating with my DD for 14 days and in NHS. No way would I ask for my AL back! I'm grateful I can be at home with her, it's lucky timing. IMHO Unless you become sick or your employer won't let you go home, you shouldn't take sick leave.

Sadly there may be plenty of time & need to take sick leave later on 😞

Hingeandbracket · 20/03/2020 10:02

Yes you are 100% entitled to exchange annual leave for sick. Thanks to this EU ruling you can only ever be sick on your employer's time now, never on your own -

She isn't sick. Her child has a temperature.
