I beg you for ways to keep my 17 month old occupied

Because I am struggling. He is so active and we usually go out every day. We have a park across the road we go to almost routinely. We go walking a lot, and I take him out in the running buggy. He is an outdoor baby and we are stuck inside. He is miserable and I am struggling to keep him entertained. He has been crying and whining all morning. I have tried painting with him, getting all his toys out, TV, dancing, but he just wants to go out. We are on day 2 and have 12 days left of isolation. I am in tears and am dreading the next two weeks. Any advice, please?

Sorry. Should've posted on coronavirus.

We went out walking in the pram. The only contact we had was with the shop assistant.

GhettoMatrix · 18/03/2020 16:20

@asanactualwoman I have symptoms so can't really go out sadly.

Have you got any wool or ribbon? Try tying it to something and get him to wind it around your home ot maybe jusy one room. as its annoying to manuovere around. encorage him to unwind and redo differently.

Hohohole · 18/03/2020 16:24

Fill a basin with warmish water and put different things in it, toys, cups, sponges. Put a towel underneath.
Wrestling on the bed.
Chase around the house
I'm getting her a indoor trampoline to use up some energy.
Baths.

I have nothing helpful to add because similar situation (not got symptoms but pregnant so reducing outings) - just want to sympathise because it’s haaaaaaaard! Tried to split up day into different activities and save tv until 4pm. It’s very tricky as attention span is so short

Finfintytint · 18/03/2020 16:25

Cardboard box Castle, bed trampoline, bath games, hide and seek around the room. Anything to get little legs moving.

mogtheexcellent · 18/03/2020 16:26

build a fort and have a picnic lunch it it.

pack for a holiday in another room (DD still loves this). We used to travel by pretend bus (two chairs) to the seaside when she was little.

Ponoka7 · 18/03/2020 16:26

Could you change your sleeping times, so you can go for walks, earlier or later when no one is around?

You won't last for two weeks with a child that can't stay in.

Finfintytint · 18/03/2020 16:27

Pretty much cross posted with HohoHole.

DinosApple · 18/03/2020 16:29

Does he like baths? Long ones with lots of toys.
Do you have a garden or outside space at all?
My eldest DD was a whirlwind and took a lot of out door activity to keep occupied or she'd be up to mischief inside (climber).

user1333796 · 18/03/2020 16:31

I don't see why you can't go out for walks? Unless you mean you are feeling too poorly? Parks rather than playgrounds, woods, beaches, fields with a ball. As long as you remain 4m away and don't touch any public doors/gates etc you wouldn't be passing it on.

crispysausagerolls · 18/03/2020 16:33

Anyone good with brio? Spent ages on it today and can’t seem to make any of my loops join up🤪

mauvaisereputation · 18/03/2020 16:35

Can’t you go to the park and sit on the grass? Government guidance is that even if you are in isolation you can go out for exercise - as long as you stay away from others. I think park is fine, though sadly not the playground.

If possible, you should not go out even to buy food or other essentials, other than exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others.

FraughtwithGin · 18/03/2020 16:38

Teach him how to dust!
Keeps them happy for ages ;-)

Leeds2 · 18/03/2020 16:58

Balloons if you have them, or bubbles.

switswoo81 · 18/03/2020 17:08

Definitely balloons or bubbles I agree. Especially bubbles in the bath.
I'm in Ireland so we are not going out that much either but we do go for a walk around our estate every day.
In the last few days:
I got a shoe box pierced holes and she posted fusili pasta through it.
Same idea for spaghetti and a colander. Filled a basin with water and food colouring sat her in the bath (to minimise mess) and gave her IKEA plastic cups to pour into each other.
I have jelly setting in the fridge for sensory play tomorrow again in the bath. Hide a few plastic toys in it they love digging them out.
Did finger painting to make a card for my mum on mothers day. Hand print a card and write to the best nana hands down on it. Then let them mess with the paint.
Have also put a lot of Peppa on

mullyluo · 18/03/2020 18:50

Fill basin with loads of water and fairy liquid to make it bubbly then let him 'wash up' his toys. That n lots of youtube videos is how I'm coping, and lot and lots of baths.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 18/03/2020 19:03

No help but I'm following for ideas. I have an 18 month old and am dreading any of us getting symptoms and being in isolation.

MindatWork · 18/03/2020 20:27

Hi OP, I’ve a 16 month old and not self isolating yet but trying to come up with ideas - I’ve bought a cheap pop up tent from argos which is great for chasing round and playing peekaboo.

I’m also going to order a big garden tray from amazon for messy play - they have a similar one at our children’s centre and it’s great for sand, water, foam, cornflakes etc.
