Nationwide denouncing existence of tooth fairy in the name of hilarity

I’m not precious at all about these things, but isn’t having an advert saying that you do the tooth fairy money, on during the day a little harsh on those mums that have kids that believe and enjoy the magic.

Particularly as the TVs on a bit more at present to keep the news on and a lot of kids are stuck at home. Seems a bit of a dick move?

If your child is that sensitive then perhaps having the new on at the moment When they are around isn’t wise?

They would have to be paying a lot of attention to the advert to think anything

HoneyDragon · 18/03/2020 08:09

It’s on during family shows too, I was using the news as an example of the tv being a media that’s probably switched on more at the moment anyway.

AngstyAnnie · 18/03/2020 08:10

That does seem a dick move! What ad was it?

HoneyDragon · 18/03/2020 08:14

Nationwide one of the comedian ads.

OP posts:
LastTrainEast · 18/03/2020 08:17

People make jokes about Flat Earthers without considering their feelings, but anyway when they are old enough to pick up on things like that they are ready to stop believing anyway.

ZebrasAreHorsesInPyjamas · 18/03/2020 08:17

This one? I barely understood it, she was talking so fast, I am fairly sure no child would actually be paying attention to it. How old is your child? You could always just dismiss it as a silly bank advert that doesn't make sense and breeze past it. I always used that kind of ruse with my DD...

Mummadeeze · 18/03/2020 08:18

Completely agree, luckily my DD was in the other room and didn’t hear. But what were they thinking, seriously :(

NymphadoraBonks · 18/03/2020 08:19

God those ads are dire. Couldn’t they have found some funny comedians? Ffs. Embarrassing.

staringatonewall · 18/03/2020 08:22

Jesus really!
There are adds on tv for things much worse all the time.
I mean are people really this precious about their children overhearing things? Children overhear things all the time.

staringatonewall · 18/03/2020 08:23

@Mummadeeze
I imagine they were thinking the world doesn’t revolve around some children

CherryBlossomPink · 18/03/2020 08:25

If the ad is the one posted above then YABU - I’ve just watched it and it does nothing more than imply that a parent is the tooth fairy - if a child is young enough to believe then the implication will be meaningless to them

HoneyDragon · 18/03/2020 08:25

Well this has impressively turned into an opportunity to judge other people’s parenting

OP posts:
staringatonewall · 18/03/2020 08:37

Is your child genuinely affected by the implication that a parent is the tooth fairy by a comedian on the tv ?

Has anyone’s child been affected by this?

Bezalelle · 18/03/2020 08:41

The sooner we stop leading kids up the garden path with bilge like the tooth fairy and Father Christmas, the better.

InfiniteSheldon · 18/03/2020 08:44

I agree those adverts have a real undercurrent of nastiness very ill judged.

DivGirl · 18/03/2020 09:23

The Nationwide adverts are terrible but you're still being unreasonable.

I genuinely do not understand this current trend of lying to children beyond when they are old enough to work it out and ask about it (or lying to them full stop but I recognise from the Santa threads that I am in an evil and childhood-destroying minority there).

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 18/03/2020 13:10

Do children actually believe in the tooth fairy? I believed in santa, completely, but always knew the tooth fairy was a work of fiction. I don't think I know anyone that believed in it.

heartsonacake · 18/03/2020 13:41

YABU. The world doesn’t revolve around children and the lies their parents have fed them.

jackparlabane · 18/03/2020 13:45

It was only MN that taught me that there are people who try to actually make kids believe in Father Christmas and tooth fairies, rather than everyone pretending.

Ds pretends to believe so he gets his money, and has quite the mythology created, but also means he totally understands when I tell him the tooth fairy only comes round about once a week now due to spending cuts (nothing to do with me not having £2 in change for a molar...)

goingoverground · 18/03/2020 13:48

I don't think a child of an age that they believe in the tooth fairy is going to understand the subtle implications of that joke. Rather than questioning the existence of the tooth fairy it's far more likely that they will want to know why the tooth fairy doesn't leave them £5 Grin

PenisBeakerDipper · 18/03/2020 13:50

I don’t think any kid young enough to believe in the tooth fairy would understand that. At no point does she say she or her husband are the tooth fairy, she says “the tooth fairy decided, in a panic...” - at worst a child will think they are getting a bum deal!

Likefootball · 18/03/2020 13:51

Wether or not kids believe, I suspect they don't care where the tooth money comes from so long as its there.

PositiveVibez · 18/03/2020 13:52

I think every nationwide advert that has ever had the misfortune to grace our screens should be put into room 101

I hate them ALL. From the singing twats, to the two idiots who want to see the sunrise together, to the 'comedy' ads.

They are soooo off the mark with what they're aiming for.

LemonRedwood · 18/03/2020 13:54

YABU. Nowhere in that ad does it say the tooth fairy does not exist. You are making inferences that children won't.

annamie · 18/03/2020 13:55

Get a grip, OP. You are being previous.
