Hi, ok so new at this.

My daughter is 8 and has been asking me about this tiktok app and said she wants to join it.
I'm slightly concerned about this as I feel she's still to young, some of the songs just aren't appropriate.

Can I have opinions please no rudeness.

OP posts:
sleepismysuperpower1 · 17/03/2020 20:31

no, i wouldn't let her get it. my dd (15) has it, and its not (imo) suitable for an 8 year old. people are often rude in the comments sections and in videos, and the songs aren't appropriate.

inwood · 17/03/2020 20:34

Not a chance. 8 yo Dts have been asking and the answer is no.

Bloomburger · 17/03/2020 20:35

We have two guys who are police computer experts come into school to give a talk on what these Apps actually can expose our children to and say not to let your child have it. It is a peadophiles playground.

Did you know too yep that if your child sends a photo to someone unless you turn off something on your device the person who received the photo can do something that shows them the address of where it was taken. So if your child is asked to send someone a picture of their sofa, thinking its innocuous they do it, no harm there eh? Well the baddy can track down your address and blackmail them.

The talk these guys gave put the fear of god into me and I've got ones at Uni as well as young ones!

Cbh13 · 17/03/2020 20:39

I apperciate all your comments. I new .y gut feeling was right and I new not letting her go on it was the right decision.

Minesacider · 17/03/2020 21:02

My teenage niece has it, theres no way I'd allow my 8yo to be on it. It's a lot of shite.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/03/2020 21:17

It was a no from me when dd(8) asked. Though I did clarify it was a "not now" no. So when she is older much fucking older we will reassess.

bemoreeverything · 17/03/2020 21:21

EIGHT???

Absolutely not. Don't ask on here though, download it yourself and have a look. It's a horrific app.

leftovercoffeecake · 17/03/2020 21:25

That’s way too young. I like TikTok myself, but it’s definitely not appropriate for younger people. There’s a lot of mature themes and explicit language. Plus the videos appear at random so you can’t control what she’ll see.

SEE123 · 17/03/2020 21:29

Not a chance. It is a truly horrendous app with absolutely no safe guards or proper filters. The content on there is questionable to say the least, and there have been several other MN posts about children accidentally gifting hundreds of pounds to "influencers". I would avoid at all costs.

chuck7 · 17/03/2020 21:33

8 is far too young OP. I know you're concerned which is why you're asking. Download the app and there is a a main feed which anyone can scroll through filled with everything teenagers do when they're pushing boundaries. Sexual dancing, bad language, talk of self harm, suicide, drink, drugs. Not for an 8 year old.

Justanotherlurker · 17/03/2020 21:39

It's a more refined instagram, so as such as implemented policies such as this:

That, however is bullshit and embellished village chatter, it was only a couple of months ago that tumblr dropped porn links and they had some serious hardcore BDSM stuff, tumblr being predominantly a female platform and the outcry didn't make the news though and why it is hidden under different tags is why you will never know what is going on, just like you with your parents, we are in a new situation of where do we draw the line, I don't want government inteferrence though

Darbs76 · 17/03/2020 21:47

At 8 100% not

bemoreeverything · 17/03/2020 21:57

TikTok is absolutely not a 'refined instagram' despite the link.

Bloomburger · 18/03/2020 10:27

justsnotherlurker it's not bullshit they come to our local school and do a presentation and show us what can be accessed.

Gilead · 18/03/2020 10:37

Tik Tok filter out people they consider ugly and disabled people.

Atalune · 18/03/2020 10:39

NO WAY

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 10:40

Tik Tok filter out people they consider ugly and disabled people.

Have you ever been on TikTok 🙄

Gilead · 18/03/2020 11:20

Have you ever been on TikTok 🙄
On the news yesterday.

Gilead · 18/03/2020 11:21

some information here

Boredoftherain · 18/03/2020 15:19

I had downloaded Tiktok to make my own last year; unlike most social media platforms where you are only shown content from who you choose to follow, any and all videos can show up on the 'for you page', these do include inappropriate videos. Adult men wearing masks and alluding to BDSM, sex jokes, swearing, sexually suggestive content. Tiktok is fairly okay with taking down content that contains nudity and weapons, even cosplayers with prop weapons have videos removed, however I would advise against letting an 8 year old have the app. Yes, some of the content might go over their heads, but I have been a bit shocked some of the videos

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 15:38

@Gilead

I'm not sure why you think the 'ugly filter' thing is even relevant here. The app exposes people to really nasty things, that's the important thing people need to know. Their morals are missing so a wee piece about filters means nothing. We need to protect children from exposure.

strawberrylipgloss · 18/03/2020 16:00

There's a lot of dangerous content on TikTok like the various challenges that can end up with people seriously hurt

strawberrylipgloss · 18/03/2020 16:02

They are not hot on banning people who have been known to message and groom kids through its app too.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 18/03/2020 16:09

My 10 year old DS has TikTok but with some stringent rules in place.

There is a filter for explicit content which helps some. He has it on his iPod and because it’s not linked to a phone number he cannot DM or have anyone DM him.

He’s only allowed to watch the videos when he’s sat by me. I haven’t seen anything horribly inappropriate. A couple of rap songs with inappropriate lyrics but it’s blink and you’d miss it. I like the ones where they drop glitter onto a phone camera. It’s very soothing to watch.

He does create his own videos which was the main reason he wanted it but his account is locked down tight so no one can see anything he does.

I think banning things inevitably makes them much more wanted. When possible I try to make sure apps can be used safely with parental supervision. We’ve actually had a lovely time sat watching the videos together.
