The "Quiet Coach" on Trains

I’m sure you’re all well-aware of what my rant will be...

Why on earth do loud people book seats in the quiet coaches on trains?!? I genuinely don’t get it! There are 7 coaches where you can go and chit chat as you please! Why not sit there?!?

I’m currently on a “quiet coach” and despite the corona panic it has several people merrily chatting away about panic buying! Arrrtghhhh!

I’m not asking for the whole train to be silent, just one small part of it. What is unreasonable about that?

It's public transport, that's what. How arrogant can you get to expect silence on a train Confused

skybluee · 17/03/2020 17:01

YANBU. It's meant to be quiet. It's not meant to be silent, meaning a few words here and there are OK - silence would be impossible. But the point is it's meant to be quiet - and a long, ongoing conversation of more than a few sentences isn't quiet and most likely is disturbing people. If you know you want to chat, you don't go in the quiet coach, it's really inconsiderate. Can you imagine if everyone in there had a conversation?

Jespers · 17/03/2020 18:04

I’ve been out in the quiet coach when I didn’t request it but it doesn’t mean no talking- it means no loud noise, no phone convos, no music or music that can be heard even though the listener uses headphones.
It’s not a funeral, you don’t have to sit and mime at each other!!

PinkRobots · 17/03/2020 19:12

For flips sake! I started this thread to get rid of the millions of c-word threads and have a moan about something else! I didn't think I'd be told I was being unreasonable. Sad

Turns out lots of people don't agree with you. Apart from your woman upthread who shouts at carriages full of people and cranes her neck to stare at blokes on the table next to her. Sucks, eh?

Fr0g · 17/03/2020 19:48

my whinge is that I do usually get the quiet coach, when I reserve that - however I also request window, table, facing in the direction of travel.
I invariably end up in an airline style seat next to the aisle, travelling backwards.
Why ask me my preferences & then deliberately avoid them FFS?

& yes, quiet coaches are primarily no phones, noisy electronic games, etc, although I did once get a guard to remove a noisy hen party.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/03/2020 19:52

A lot of people do agree with you OP. Seems the cv issue has just brought out the ‘me’, ‘me’, ‘me’ cuntishness in others.

I have booked train tickets with a family railcard and 3 children, 1 adult and found we have tickets that are reserved for the quiet coach.
If there had been the option then I would definitely have asked for them not to be in the quiet coach as keeping 3 small children quiet on a 5 hour journey is not fun. However there isn't much you can do on a crowded train when you find that's where the tickets are.

NewPapaGuinea · 17/03/2020 20:54

No conversations on the quiet coach!

Lots of people do agree with you, Pink. I do too. I'm guessing the ones who don't can't keep their thoughts to themselves for a couple of hours, the charmers.

LexMitior · 18/03/2020 01:30

Small children can’t help themselves. Adults - different story. Talkers in the quiet coach are impolite and inconsiderate. There’s a whole bloody train if you need to flap your lips. Go there.

They say “but talking is allowed”. It’s England. It’s manners, not rules. That’s like saying farting loudly is allowed. Maybe it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s within the spirit of things.

These are the same people who need to be told everything three times and claim that unless it’s written in blood that they didn’t know. They are a pita.

mauvaisereputation · 18/03/2020 03:57

I’m also very surprised about people defending loudness on the quiet coach. It’s not rocket science - no loud conversations. If you can hear the convo word for word it’s too loud.

PinkRobots · 18/03/2020 22:20

It sounds like the booking system needs to take this into consideration.

However, from the way this thread has gone, it looks like some people would still sit in the quiet coach and chat...
