To think one good thing may be, more people working from home in the future?

Lots of workplaces are being forced to consider this option now. Hopefully this might lead to more people working from home long term?

Let commuting, pollution, pressure to look good, opportunity to eat proper food, time to do other stuff as opposed to commuting.

There are downsides:

  • Mental health issues through isolation, and this might sneak up on you even if you are looking forward to wfh.
  • pressure to be seen to be contributing.
  • tendency to over work to compensate.
  • no accidental discoveries of knowledge, the ones you get when you bump into someone and they tell you something important that you otherwise wouldn’t have know.
  • possibly reduce collaboration, where between people having a casual chat a new idea is born.
  • additional cost on your personal energy bills. (More than offset by travel probably though)
  • not having ‘work you’ and ‘home you’.
  • not meeting friends after work for dinner because it would mean travelling in (that’s a city one maybe)
  • face to face induction of new staff is far superior.
  • face to face training is better too so people might take longer to be effective.
  • over eating as you pick at stuff but don’t have the walk to and from the station/work.
  • less of a shared work culture.
  • not meeting your future husband/wife

Having said that, I like wfh and do it fairly frequently anyway.
