Would you still go in for baby monitoring with everything that’s going on?

So pregnant women are now high risk for corona virus (I hope I’ve got this right) and have been told they should self-isolate for 12 weeks. I’m 35 weeks, due in 4 (planned C-Section) and I have to go in twice a week for monitoring for reduced fetal movements and for three weekly scans because I have a bowel disease and I’m on medication that can affect growth. What happens now? I haven’t asked anyone yet because I only saw the news this evening, if you were me would you continue going for the weekly monitoring? I don’t want to be irresponsible either way but how are we meant to self-isolate with scans and hospital appointments?

Go in unless the hospital says otherwise? That’s what I will be doing.

Dishwashersaurous · 16/03/2020 20:20

The requirement is to avoid all unnecessary social contact- medical treatment is essential. Do definitely go and continue to go unless hospital tells you not to.

Just if possible don’t go on public transport and definitely don’t go to a coffee shop

CandleFlames · 16/03/2020 20:21

Thank you both!

Yes I would go. I am 31 weeks and have scans once or twice a week. Had a scan today and they said all non essential treatment is being cancelled but anything in fetal medicine will continue (some non essential antenatal treatment will be cancelled).

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 16/03/2020 20:22

You need to attend your appointments unless told otherwise. Reduced movements or growth could have a devastating consequence to your pregnancy and baby. As long as you follow guidelines with hand washing etc and don’t touch anything in the hospital unnecessarily then you should be fine. The hospital cleaning team will be on high alert also to minimise infection. Normally you don’t need to go through A&E or the out of hours GP service to get to the maternity wards. Good luck Op and please don’t put your baby at risk. The hospital would cancel your appointment if they didn’t think it was safe for you.

Medical treatment is essential, socialising is not. Go in and get yourself checked.

Good luck with the baby.

RhymingRabbit3 · 16/03/2020 20:25

Yes I would go in.

DaisyintheCloud · 16/03/2020 20:25

Go in. Reduced movement must be monitored, it is essential social contact.

schafernaker · 16/03/2020 20:28

Not being checked for reduced movement could lead to a still birth... I think that would make my decision for me.

Parent of a preemie who’s reduced movements highlighted severe iugr.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 20:39

You need to go. Reduced fetal movements at this stage can result in stillbirths - you need to keep going so they can plan your induction / section if needed. Good luck!

BogRollBOGOF · 16/03/2020 21:06

Absolutely go in for your appointments. The consequences for not attending could potentially be far worse than the virus.
Maternity areas of hospitals tend to be fairly seperate to the general medical areas so shouldn't be around people known to be a risk.

PardonWhat · 16/03/2020 21:42

Yes please still go in.
The minuscule risk of corona virus affecting the baby is so much better than the alternatives!

TheLarkAscending · 16/03/2020 21:49

Please continue to go in for the essential monitoring of you and your baby, unless you are advised otherwise and an alternative plan is put in place for monitoring. The monitoring is essential.

EverdeRose · 18/03/2020 17:53

Pregnant women haven't yet been told yo self isolate.
The advice is to follow social distancing precautions very carefully and to expect a period of self isolation to coincide with the peak of the outbreak.

esmerelda1988 · 18/03/2020 18:35

I'm going to be in the same position in a month or two with frequent scans- I would definitely still go unless told otherwise. Just make sure you wash hands, don't touch anything if you possibly can as PP say. I'm more worried that my care will be scaled back or cancelled by the time I get there- very scary time to be a high risk pregnancy .
