Our DS turns 4 on Friday and his birthday party has been cancelled. We would have a few friends over happily but of course DD has come down with a fever today so we are self isolating for two weeks. Haven’t broken this to him yet - he will be pretty sad.
SO can I ask for as many exciting weird and wonderful ideas as you can to make the day fun for him?! Anything you’ve done on a rainy day which your kids have loved? Pretty sure DD will be raring time take part (20 months) too so anything she can do also welcome.
Happy to throw money at the problem and can use our garden too.
Send me your ideas. All I can do is feel really sad for my gorgeous boy and worried about my warm little girl

Build a tent/den in the living room with fairy lights and decorative stuff and have a picnic in it?

Make a "treasure hunt" with either lots of little games/sweets to find around the house or a picture treasure trail for him to follow with a bigger prize at the end?

Get him to make and ice some fairy cakes with you?

Sitting room camping?

Ice cream sundae bar

  • squirty cream
  • marshmallows
  • haribo
  • chocolate/strawberry sauce
  • malteasers
  • Whatever they like and let them go go crazy

Could do the same with pizza toppings for a savoury choice

Fancy dress and silly role plays with all of you just going crazy

As many balloons as you can stand all over the place and let him pop them if he likes that

Present hunt - do a treasure hunt for his gifts

At that my daughter loved treasure hunts, I used free space to planner software and tea stained it, burnt some holes and left clues marked on the spot leading to presents, also did it for Easter egg hunts.

KTD27 · 16/03/2020 19:17

YES treasure hunts a great idea and ice cream bar will be very favourably received

How about making 'custard pies' out of shaving foam or squirty cream and a plastic / paper plate then DC get to splat you / DH / each other in the face!!!

KTD27 · 16/03/2020 19:54

Hahaha he would love that

DM did it for us one year and it's always stayed with me Grin. She did it as a quiz and if you got it wrong you were splatted!!

Poetryinaction · 16/03/2020 20:21

Potatoes on a fire outside. Garden treasure hunt.

BigBairyHollocks · 16/03/2020 21:45

If you can could you put up a paddling pool in the kitchen, turn up the heat and have a “summer holiday” party? If you have wallpaper rolls paint a mural of a beach and hang it up,play “beach” music and have a disco, all wear summer stuff? And also treat food you wouldn’t normally have.

BigBairyHollocks · 16/03/2020 21:46

Yes to a quiz,my son loves when I turn his favourite topic into a quiz which he inevitably gets first prize in.Don't worry you can make it good!

I kinda want a birthday party of my own to cancel now...

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 16/03/2020 22:07

QuinoaWest · 16/03/2020 22:11

If you do go with beach party theme, what about some realistic tropical ocean wave sounds in the background?!

Hope he enjoys himself, and that your DD feels better soon.

Swearwolf · 16/03/2020 22:11

Oh OP I sympathise, I'm in the same boat! Dd turns 4 this week and we're about to cancel her party. She doesn't know yet, she'll be so sad.

Edwintheboyscout · 16/03/2020 22:30

Sorry that's so tough when you're only almost 4. One party game our children loved involved a dice, a coat, scarf and gloves, a large bar of chocolate and a knife and fork - bear with me if it sounds daft! When you throw a six with the dice, you put on coat, scarf and gloves and then use the knife and fork to try to unwrap and eat the chocolate. But if someone else throws a six it's their turn, and so on. Hope this makes sense ! I always remember my youngest son - who turns 18 this weekend, so I can sympathise a little - loving this ! I hope you manage to have fun.

Hobbycraft sell massive cardboard play huts to colour in - a space ship, an igloo, castle etc. Nothing brought my kids more joy than getting into one of those for about six hours on Christmas Day with a few toys and snacks!

KTD27 · 17/03/2020 08:06

Amazing! These are such brilliant ideas. I’ve broken the news and he was quite stoic about it really god bless him. Cheered up immensely when I suggested splatting daddy in the face like mr tumble

I love that you've thrown daddy under the bus when it comes to pie splatting!

I'm sorry darling, mummy can't be splatted she has to make the pies which is a very very important job, look get daddy! Grin

At home obstacle course was a great love for my 4 yo. Cushions hurdles, climbing over chairs, stepping stones, walking on a tape line etc.

tappitytaptap · 17/03/2020 10:23

We’re in the same boat too but when we explained to him that he could have a party when the nasty germs had gone away he was surprisingly ok about it. We will have a little family gathering on his birthday, tea, favourite foods and maybe some of the ideas here like fairy lights etc.
