Lose pay or keep Dd off school?

inmyshoos · 16/03/2020 16:43

My youngest (12) has a new cough so self isolating for 7 days as per guidelines.
I have to work for 4 hours tmrw.
Her older sister (14) could stay home and I could go to work. Younger Dd coughing but no fever and not ill as such but she wouldn't be happy home alone.
Or I stay home and have been told I won't be paid.
I was considering taking them out of school anyway but older Dd wants to go!

As a single parent we will struggle with my pay.

Aibu to keep older Dd off so I can work?

@Healthyandhappy latest advice is whole household needs to self-isolate for 14 days.

edgewater · 16/03/2020 17:44

It’s 14 days. Announced in the last hour at the press conference.

RainydaysandMondaysalways · 16/03/2020 17:46

Are you not entitled to sickpay if self isolating?

Healthyandhappy · 16/03/2020 17:50

Ahh yes just watched it thanks. Xx

SoloMummy · 16/03/2020 17:59

Current advice as from 445 is all family isolate for 14 days.

Herpesfreesince03 · 16/03/2020 18:02

Just been announced live that if anyone in the house is sick, the whole house has to quarantine for 14 days

inmyshoos · 16/03/2020 18:09

Found it. Oh well deep joy... Oldest DD is not a happy camper... She had better get used to the idea. Hmm

Whole households to stay at home
Prof Whitty said if one person in any household starts to display symptoms, everyone living there must stay at home for 14 days.

Mr Johnson said the 14-day stay at home advice means people should, if possible, avoid leaving the house "even to buy food or essentials".

He said people could leave home to do exercise but should do so at a safe distance from others.

Prof Whitty said social restrictions would be "very difficult for people to maintain" but they would be "doing it to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed".

I'd keep my older daughter off and get myself to work and earn. Who knows what is coming, you may be glad of the money in the long run and no harm to your poorly girl.

I hope she's better quickly Daffodil

Review the newest info. Whole household isolation if anyone has symptoms - 14 days

I've been told that our company policy is that if we self isolate with no symptoms, not only do we not get paid but it will be classed as 'unauthorised absence' which will mean disciplinary when we go back.

goodnessidontknow · 16/03/2020 20:27

Watching that is illegal and won't be tolerated in the current climate. ACAS will be able to support you if your employer does try it on.

Twillow · 16/03/2020 20:35

@WatchingFromTheWings

I think a random decision to self-isolate with no symptoms would certainly fit unauthorised absence. But not if you have a family member with symptoms, from today's announcement. Though the lack of information on sick pay in such situations is apparent.

smoodgy · 16/03/2020 20:37

The guidance is the whole family has to isolate - you can claim stat sick pay from the government

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 16/03/2020 20:42

Babymamaroon you would seriously do that and put others at risk? Even though they say that now, if one family member has symptoms, the whole family must self isolate for 14 days?

I hope that you are just late with the updated instructions rather than just blatantly advising people to put others at risk.

Poetryinaction · 16/03/2020 20:46

Ok this isn't going to work! I am a teacher.
My daughter was sent home with a fever today but it went immediately. Nursery told us if it went she can come in tomorrow but will have her temp taken at the door and refused entry if over the threshold.
Now all pregnant teachers must self isolate. And anyone who has anyone in their house with a cough or fever?
My HOD just emailed to say she won't be in.
Really I shouldn't either. I know of a few other staff members. So there won't be enough of us to remain open. Schools can't stay open under these guidelines. It's a contradiction.

FFS, I'd be contacting the BBC/local media/naming and shaming anonymously on here or on other social media.

Darbs76 · 16/03/2020 20:51

12 is fine to be home alone. My 11yr old daughter lets herself in and has for ages

Babymamaroon · 16/03/2020 20:52

Onemorehit sorry I was busy working so hadn't seen any updates on the 14 days quarantine.

TheSoapyFrog · 16/03/2020 21:04

Well I guess nobody will be home alone now as all of you will have to isolate for 14 days!
I'm really interested to know how anybody is actually supposed to comply with this when they have to go to work...

Worriedmum54321 · 16/03/2020 21:13

Simple - you are not allowed to go to work if you or anyone in your household has had a cough or fever within the last 14 days. So stay at home. It's not difficult to understand

TheSoapyFrog · 16/03/2020 21:24

Some people have the sort of jobs where they can't just suddenly disappear for 14 days. Nor can they work from home. It takes time to sort out cover. How lovely to be in such a black and white world

WatchingFromTheWings · 16/03/2020 23:35

@goodnessidontknow @Twillow

Thanks for the info! Hoping I won't need it but will certainly check it out just in case. If I don't need it, a colleague might.
