How would you budget for this?

I am wondering if it comes down to it, how to manage surviving off of statutory sick pay? It is only £94.25 a week? Both me and my husband would be eligible for this so total around 750 a month. This would barely cover our mortgage. How on earth are we going to survive is we both get sick?

Take a mortgage holiday and wipe out that chunk of expenditure for a while

ButtWormHole · 16/03/2020 16:11

Well you can’t.

You need to start cutting back now. Any unnecessary spending needs to go. You need to build an emergency fund with any savings.

Lots of mortgage companies are offering breaks on payments if we go into lockdown, which is a big help.

Otherwise, save what you can now. Comparison websites are great and can really help save money even if it's not immediate - it could help in a month or two. Is there anything you can sell on Facebook or eBay - things like DVD's or books?

Mortgage break is great, not so good for the millions who rent though (imagining landlords will NOT be as understanding as the banks!).

Truthfully, I don’t think we’d survive on stat sick pay. We have four DC and our bills (minus mortgage) are definitely double sick pay. We’d have to get into debt in order to afford food, terrifying.

Start saving now. Cut all essential bills and try and work overtime in meantime if possible.

This is why I drum into my children about saving as no one knows when the rainy days will come. It’s even more important when there are dependant children to support.

It wouldn’t even cover my rent. Short term my mother would lend me money, long term no fucking clue!

I’m working on growing my savings but I’m on a low income so can’t afford to save much, it wouldn’t last long if I had to live off it.
