To think one only needs so many wax melts??

My friend started a business making candles, wax melts etc. She has a few scents that I really like, but only a few - I'm not into perfume dupes or floral-y scents, so I've already ordered all I need from her for the next few months! She's not necessarily bothering me for them, but I get tagged in a few posts occasionally.

Mostly I see people buying probably hundreds/winning them through raffles and I can't fathom where they put them all?!

I use a company called scented melts. I normally buy about 20 and store them in a box and then when I am starting to run low top then up. The lady in the shop said you can go nose blind to the smell and end up changing too soon so your best bet is to cut them in half so you are not wasting them as it just halves the burn time not the strength of the smell and she has been right so last way longer as after a few days I couldnt smell them x

I used to spend a fortune on scentsy waxes, until I started hating that underlying specific scentsy smell.

Now I use febreeze plug ins and they are so much nicer! Cheaper to replace too.

I ended up selling a huge box of about 20 or 30 full and part full scentsy waxes on eBay for £24 just couldn’t stand that smell anymore

Is it Scentsy? If so it’s because it’s an MLM, i have six friends on facebook who are now selling it...!

LokiOdinson · 16/03/2020 17:17

Definitely not Scentsy!

Here's a tip, just open your windows daily and you won't need them.

Weebitawks · 16/03/2020 17:55

It's because your friend is a pyramid seller. Honestly they're like bloody cults. I've started taking a really hard line with this sort of thing. I've had 2 people invite me to their body shop group this week and to be honest I'm sick of it clogging up my feed. I use Facebook to keep up to date with friends, not be hounded to buy shit I don't need.

One woman who I knew through kids sports club added me as a friend and I thought that was nice till she started with trying to flog me stuff.

I'm all for supporting other woman but you can't make money from this shit and you mostly just piss people off.

PorpentinaScamander · 16/03/2020 17:57

I've got a box full. Only I've lost my sense of smell completely so don't even use them anymore Grin

LokiOdinson · 16/03/2020 18:04

She makes them all herself, she's definitely not an MLM seller lol.

Scented candles etc smell horrid (IMHO) and are bad for your health - and children's health - and for the environment (that's not my opinion but medical fact):

TheFastandTheCurious · 16/03/2020 18:44

Not Darcy's is it? I agree with a PP, open your windows and air your house instead of an artificial stink

Englishrosegarden · 16/03/2020 18:58

These things are horribly toxic. If you have to use them then please don't use these in the same room as pets, their lungs are much smaller and less able to cope with the toxic chemicals. Here's an article that explains: www.thepurringtonpost.com/catsandscentedcandles/

Theonewiththecandles · 16/03/2020 19:35

Most people now use soy wax not paraffin so the "dangers" are really not applicable

Onandonandons · 16/03/2020 19:38

I have honestly never felt the need to have something scented in my home beyond some air freshener in the bathroom that we rarely use.

I never used plug ins or scented candles.

florascotia2 · 16/03/2020 20:39

Soy wax (unless organic, small-farm produced) is also bad for the environment. Soy cultvation is responsible for terrible deforestation and destruction of wildlife habitat; much of it is from very intensive farming using herbicides and pesticides etc etc. Soy wax itself is highly-processed and has to be mixed with additives - sometimes derived from petroleum - to make it suitable for candlemaking.

This article is produced by the makers of beeswax candles, who obviously have a vested interest in the topic, but is a useful summary of the environmental downsides of soy wax:
beeswaxco.com/beeswax-candles/soy-candles-or-beeswax-candles/

This pionnering academic paper looked at the damage to health caused by scented products (most scents in most products - including candles - are artificial) www.national-toxic-encephalopathy-foundation.org/fragsmoke.pdf Many scents of natural origin have been banned in recent years, since that paper was published - just ask people who like 'old-style' perfumes; some other natural substances have not yet been fully tested.

OK - organic soy wax or beeswax candles without perfume will probably not harm you or damage the environment. But there's not much good to say about the rest....
