To panic buy my babies milk.. because of panic buyers?

DP thinks I’m being unreasonable. We both think all this panic buying is way over the top and we’ve shopped as normal (except not being able to find toilet roll and pasta)

But I went out to get a tin of my babies milk yesterday and there is none anywhere. All out of stock. We usually have one open and one in the cupboard. But we’re nearly done with the current tin and will be moving into the spare tin in a couple of days. I said to DP that if I do manage to find some I’d like to have 2 or 3 tins in the cupboard spare. She’s getting through it much faster now she’s on 7oz and I’m starting to worry that when it boils down to needing some I won’t be able to find it and DD will go hungry.

I even said to DP that maybe I should try breastfeeding again (had no supply so had to put baby into formula) but I’m not sure whether I’d be able to make enough if any at all.

I hate all this panic buying.

God alright, calm down, I said it was ridiculous for me and probably most other ff mums. I'm not trying to stop the OP doing whatever she wants.

Also, people talking about breastfeeding a 23 month old is a bit irrelevant. A 23 month old doesn't need formula anyway so I'm failing to see what that's got to do with a conversation about formula being in short supply.

As a maternity nurse can I say that all the brands like aptimil cow and gate - sma and even Aldi and Lidl own brand milk are all literally the same

Just diff packaging making price different

So don’t worry about buying diff and mix and matching iyswim

I would. It's the only thing I would stockpile, little babies need it, they can't just have something else instead. My local Tesco petrol station had loads of aptamil stage 1 today. Maybe try smaller shops/petrol stations?

My mother was told today by a work colleague (who is a midwife) that if you cant find any formula in shops you can ring the number on the tin and they company can send you some directly. I do t know if it's right or not but worth a go Halo

Baby milk is probably the biggest priority. Get what you need plus one extra. No more, I'd say

Cacaca · 16/03/2020 15:03

We got in Tesco no bother today.

eBay should stop people flogging it. My little one is now 12m and I’ve got her into normal milk straight away as I don’t want to be dependent on formula. 6 months ago I’d have been really worried (and indeed did stockpile ahead of Brexit). Surely there will need to be rationing to make sure everyone has enough to feed their small babies?

Same for Calpol and paracetamol. There are lots of poorly babies around that aren’t getting medicine because the shelves are bare. The last thing the system needs is poorly children ending up at the gp because parents can’t get medicine for their children.

I think it’s reasonable to keep a one month supply of something as essential as baby formula.

If you are at 11 weeks and have a pump, it wouldn’t hurt to try reestablishing your supply.

shas19 · 16/03/2020 15:52

I would! I've been buying nappies and wipes each time I go shopping or pass boots. Buying a little extra each time if fine unless its 8 boxes of milk and 5 packs of nappies when theres hardly any anyways.

That's not true. There was a post from one of the formula companies refuting it. Sad

No stage 1 cow and gate on Amazon.
