Smoke alarm beeping and driving me berserk

AIBU?
Twice I've climbed up on a chair to attempt to replace a battery or something in the stupid thing. Except nothing seems moveable. Well, I nearly fell off the chair, but that's as much movement as there was.

It says 'Mains smoke alarm'. It doesn't appear to have a part that comes off so that you could fit a battery, but it is beeping piercingly loud every five minutes or so. If I can't replace a battery, what am I supposed to do with it? Or how do I stop it beeping?

Excellent - you should be fine for one night! I didn’t realise for years you could turn it off at the fuse box....I even once went to a 24hr Asda at 4am for a new square battery😳🤣...sleep tight!

You need a screwdriver to prune off the cover.

I bought a stick on one as a temp solution when I had to disconnect mine before I smashed it with a sledgehammer

Recent experience of this with my mains powered one. Fire brigade won't touch it. Had to get an electrician to replace it for £30.

turdtimelucky · 16/03/2020 00:14

Well, I haven't got 30 to spare, so it will be remaining off.

I think you’ve reached the point where you’re going to have to smash it several times with a hammer until it completely shatters.

I feel your pain OP, I'm a short arse too, and this happened to me (although I had bought a small 3 step ladder to get to the kitchen cupboards, I hadn't thought about reaching the ceiling!) It's beeping/cheeping to let you know the battery has run out and needs replaced, ergo why it's still happening even though you've disabled the electricity supply by switching the power off at the fuse box. I ended up wrapping a tea towel round it and trying to stick it together with Sellotape one night to try and muffle it, so I could get some sleep. I can't remember exactly how, but I managed to get the actual unit dislodged from the ceiling, I think it's attached from a nail thing that's fixed to the ceiling, that has a flat round head part, and you slide the unit along a bit, so that slit then opens up to the round bit that allows the unit to hand down from the ceiling. Once I had done that, I was then able to remove the dead battery, and that stopped the beeping, until I could get a replacement battery and then I asked a taller neighbour to come and put it back onto the ceiling for me.

The button you mentioned, that when you press, the alarm sounds, that's the test button you're supposed to press (I think) monthly, to ensure the smoke alarm is still working, so at least you know it is! I hope you get it sorted soon.

Ours when the battery died had to replace the whole unit. A lot of landlords use this style that last about 5 years as a security thing. As it means tenants cant take the battery out and not replace it, which would void their insurance.

FixTheBone · 16/03/2020 07:32

It will definitely have a removable cover, or be unclippable from its fixture - how else was it installed in the first place?

My Mum lives with me. Last year she was watching TV in the dining room.. Interceptors came on... She thought that the police siren sounded very loud... The ad break came on and she could still hear the siren... She tracked the noise down to the pantry and the carbon monoxide alarm we hadn't used was screaming loudly... She ran in to me holding it.... I tried to take the back off but one of the screws was twisted... I picked it up and headed to our lovely neighbours...
Mr Neighbour heard me coming and flung the back door open.... I threw it at him " MAKE IT STOP PLEASSSSSSSSE!!!!! Bless him he did!!

Likethebattle · 16/03/2020 08:12

Yeah even turned off at mains it will BLEEEP as the battery despite being low is still working. Ours did this when we moved in. We changed battery....bleep...tried other batteries....bleep, took the battery cradle from another alarm....bleep. As it was a new build I matched over to the site and 5 minutes later the site manager replaced it. Usually the actual siren but once opened can be Unclipped and battery taken out to completely silence that bastard!

BlueGheko · 16/03/2020 08:15

This happened to me once in the middle of the night. I did indeed destroy it. Ripped it off the ceiling and threw in the back garden. Next morning pouring with rain first thing I heard when I went into the kitchen, beep---beep. It was still alive!

LIZS · 16/03/2020 08:21

How old is it? They have a fixed lifespan, so may need replacing. There will be a battery back up somewhere, the compartment cover may slide. Give it a hoover too as dust can trigger. Check any others linked too.
