2.5 year old has been unwell with snotty nose, cough and loose bowels for a week Hes weathering it well but still not great. Hes drinking lots of water and is soaking through nappies. He also has a huge appetite. Could this be diabetes? For reference I am a stress head

It’s worth checking that out. Trust your instincts.

I would have him checked out. However, since when were a snotty nose, cough and loose bells a sign of diabetes?

BeachBumMummy · 15/03/2020 20:57

What makes you think it is diabetes? It sounds to me like he has a bit of a cold but managing well. Does he generally have a big appetite? Or is this recent? Has he been off of his food?

If you can get in at the GP with him, I'd just get him checked over. Try and relax by doing something that usually helps to calm you xx

My 18 month old has been the same actually...eating and drinking loads, very wet nappies and also loose-ish poos that smell like ammonia

I'm going to eat him checked out after this Coronavirus craziness dies down if it's still happening

Increased appetite, drinking lots and urinating lots are definitely symptoms of Type 1 diabetes so should be checked out regardless of the additional symptoms. A virus can be a trigger for the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Try not to worry, it might not be, it could be just the cold, or a myriad of other things and most likely scenario is it’s just the cold, but do get it checked out - insist your GP does a blood glucose check as the symptoms aren’t always text book and GPS do sometimes miss it in the earlier stages. It’s probably just the effects of the cold and diarrhoea but do get it checked out. Phone 111 in the first instance so they can run through some questions.

If you suspect Type One please please don’t delay it can be fatal. Get it checked ASAP - you can buy a test meter and strips from Boots if you don’t want to go to a GP
