I had to pop to pick up a package from M&S. It was busy and apparently had been non stop all day. Lots of elderly.

Nandos was packed as I passed. Everywhere looked busy. Asda and Aldi car parks packed.

I thought it would be a ghost town.

My cousin lives in USA and apparently the panic buying has been bad last few days including toilet paper so its not just a British thing!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 14/03/2020 21:09

I think people are getting out whilst they can, before we have to baton down the hatches so to speak.

pepsirolla · 14/03/2020 21:12

I work in fragrance in big department store, we could not believe the amount of mainly elderly customers. Nothing in the store is essential so no idea why they would put themselves at potential risk. We have been deep cleaning and have wipes and handgel available but people are so blasé. One lady sneezed on her hands then picked up a tester Shock another who was wearing a mask pulled it down to smell a tester and actually touched it to her nose before pulling it back upConfused Plus many more people than usual were paying by cash instead cards, we had to disinfect our hands every time. Really confusing

Went to the garden centre to buy flowers for planting out in the garden. Browsed through the gift aisles and saw lots of toiletry gift sets. So I bought a few posh liquid hand soaps, they weren't anti bac but better than nothing. So another place to look if you're can't find soap in the supermarkets.

ChillinInMyBacta · 15/03/2020 04:02

Australian shops have suspended buybacks and rain-checks. So if you bought it these no taking it back for refund. Good idea, but like everything else increased production, distribution, temp warehouse rental, additional truck and driver hire etc. it all was too slowly implemented to have been effective.

I have purchased loo roll from China arriving in 3 weeks, it will no doubt arrive before I see it on the shelves.

Weirdwonders · 15/03/2020 07:57

I wondered if the cancellation of televised sports meant people who would otherwise have been home to watch it actually ended up going out instead

okiedokieme · 15/03/2020 07:59

Super busy here, shops full, restaurant packed, keep calm and carry on is definitely the majority approach meanwhile friends have posted photos of supermarket aisles cleared of stock, I mean ransacked with 99% taken and the remaining items scattered on the floor.

okiedokieme · 15/03/2020 08:02

B&q was heaving too, people are thinking of doing diy if forced to be at home. I'm urgently packing as I'm relocating to my dp's and will go straight away if it looks like movement restrictions are likely

Bagelsandbrie · 15/03/2020 08:02

I live near Norwich and everyone is carrying on as normal despite several confirmed cases (and probably 00s more as they’re not testing anyone unless they’re in hospital now). Shops full, people going on trains, teenagers meeting up with each other, Costa packed etc etc. I think people are in total denial - either that or they just think for most people it’s a mild flu and that’s that. I am in the vulnerable group and I am absolutely terrified, I have chronic autoimmune conditions and haven’t left the house for nearly a week unless I absolutely HAVE to. I do have a dh and dc though, who are carrying on as normal (one is 17 years old) and this makes me feel maybe what I’m doing is pointless... I think they will lock everything down soon.

DoubleAction · 15/03/2020 08:02

Yes we went to a fairly swanky restaurant last night. We chose it because the tables are well spaced Grin and expected it to be mostly empty. No, completely fully booked.

Lumpjumpbump12 · 15/03/2020 08:04

We are making the most of this weekend before the real pandemic sets in so visiting shops and library and our local country house/gardens. Figure we may be stuck inside a lot over the next few weeks so enjoying life while we can. . . . .

Leflic · 15/03/2020 08:04

I expect the older people who are out and about are pragmatic. They are used to this as flu could kill them every winter. Guess it’s a risk they weigh up. Not everyone gets infected, not every old person dies from it if they do,

Bathbrush · 15/03/2020 08:41

It’s crazy here too, although I did manage to get anti bac wipes from dunelm, and they had loads in.

TheGreatWave · 15/03/2020 09:10

Reports on my FB was that the local Tesco had been half emptied and people were queuing to get into one of the large home Bargains.

I went to smaller shops and got all I needed. Morrisons on Friday evening was a lot busier than usual.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/03/2020 09:11

Swedish friend in Stockholm told me about a week ago that she hadn’t seen any panic buying at all. (Unlike me, Asda shelves stripped of pasta and loo roll.).
A couple of days ago that had all changed - she was fed up to find no flour, hardly any eggs or potatoes, I forget what else.

itsgettingweird · 15/03/2020 09:29

Buying DIY stuff to get the jobs done is genius!

GabsAlot · 15/03/2020 13:38

My dsis who works in a private hospital but runs clinics said people still turning up coughing everywhere not covering their mouths acting like its nothing serious

she does have ocd so its very stressful for her-managrs/doctors dont seem to care and theres nothing in place if staff have to isolate

GabsAlot · 15/03/2020 13:41

sorry my post was bit ot

back to the subject i dont understand why the big shps arent rationing yet-they keep saying dont over buy we have enough noones taking any notice and the shelves are emptying in minutes

Fruityb · 15/03/2020 13:42

I popped into town earlier and there were a few people about, the usual queue at the post office collection place, plenty of traffic on the roads, managed to get bread and milk at Tesco express. It was relatively chilled and totally as normal; just a lack of loo roll!

I’ve not witnessed any craziness or any unpleasant behaviour anywhere. Apparently they were queuing to get into Aldi but that’s just like any other Sunday at a supermarket as far as I’m concerned!

StampMc · 15/03/2020 13:56

Tesco was packed this morning. I was there before it opened and got one of the last parking spaces. The aisles with pasta and tins etc were rammed. Fruit and veg and fresh stuff was fine. I’m NHS frontline and have 4dcs who will need to fend for themselves over the next few weeks as I anticipate I will either be at work covering sickness or be sick myself #selfishhoarder
I also want to limit my “social contact” over the next few weeks because the chances of me not picking it up at work and inadvertently passing it on are microscopic. We don’t have enough ppe and people keep nicking the handgel.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 15/03/2020 22:59

Stamp ,another NHS worker thinking we are bound to get it with the lack of management for us having the relevant protective equipment. If I get sick my ex has luckily said her will take our daughter and risk his health if she has it.So I'll be staying in,so need supplies.
The over 70s isolated is helpful,if I need to shop before symptoms I can, children can stay in school so parents can stay in work.
We've set up video conferencing for our family,or rather my 83 year old mum .has.She has also redone her will and organised all her financial stuff, just sorting her power of attorney out.Shes probably as emotionality affected by this as we are but staying practical.

rosinavera · 16/03/2020 19:55

I also have CKD stage 3 and have the flu jab - what are we supposed to do?
