Why is the adhd Med called "Equasym retard"? You couldn't make it up!

OP posts:
ThisMustBeMyDream · 14/03/2020 00:36

Retard is a word used in many medications. It means slow release. Equasym is a slow release medication. Hence the name.

There are lots of other medications with the same. It's a pharmacology term.

exexpat · 14/03/2020 00:38

Are you serious? You are reading way too much into the word.

It is a standard pharmaceutical term for slow-release medications. Find something else to get upset about.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/03/2020 00:39

Lots of medicines have the word retard in as before it became an insult its meaning is "delay" and it means, as far as I understand that the release of the medication is slow throughout the day.

SucculentCandle · 14/03/2020 00:39

Not just pharmacology either. Flame/fire retardant, advance/retard engine timing.
It's not always used as an insult.

Beseen19 · 14/03/2020 00:40

It's very common in medicines, it's the proper meaning of the word- slow or to delay. It means it has a special coating on it so that its not released straight away. So a pain killer you would want the effects immediately so it would be immediate release but an ADHD drug or cardiac or epilepsy drug you want to ensure that theres a therapeutic level in the body right until the next dose is due.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/03/2020 00:40

En retarde is late in French. Ritardato is delayed in Italian.

Comes from Latin, innit?

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 14/03/2020 00:44

Because it is the correct term for what the medication does. I really wouldn't waste anymore time worrying about this.

MysweetAudrina · 14/03/2020 01:03

It's kind of like getting offended when golfers use the word handicap. It's all about context really.

Ugh

Ugh
Ugh

steff13 · 14/03/2020 01:07

Do you object to items being called flame retardant?

PotholeParadise · 14/03/2020 01:08

Is it called that? I googled it, and it appeared to be the name of the medication in Finland. Or possibly America.

In the UK, it's Equasym Modified-Release.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 14/03/2020 01:12

Oh dear, op.......

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 14/03/2020 01:12

It means no offense. One of my antidepressants is called Donaren Retard (trazodone?) and due to its retarded release it keeps my anxiety at bay until morning when I take my other antidepressant. It works much better for me than the standard Donaren.

PotholeParadise · 14/03/2020 01:19

OP, I have been through this entire list of brand names, and it is only sold with that in the name in non-English speaking countries.

www.drugs.com/international/methylphenidate.html

As this is a UK-based website, I think you might be better asking on a German, Finnish or Dutch website. Don't you think?

DaveMinion · 14/03/2020 02:10

You do know the word retardation is used a lot in the medical world right?

I have adhd and Aspergers. YABVU.

DaveMinion · 14/03/2020 02:14

@PotholeParadise a lot of UK pharmacies source drugs from overseas. I’ve often had Spanish and Greek versions of pregabalin (lyrica) for example which Is another controlled drug. Adhd meds were always British though.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 14/03/2020 04:51

You can’t seriously get upset about a word being used in its original use. Maybe do some research first?

Apolloanddaphne · 14/03/2020 05:50

It's a pharmacological term not an insult.

DivGirl · 14/03/2020 06:37

Couldn't make it up indeed.

SteeperThanHell · 14/03/2020 07:10

They are called Equasym XL in the England.

The only two meds in the UK I can think of that still use retard are Adalat and Tegretol which have been around for a very long time - long before I qualified in the early 90s.

BertieBotts · 14/03/2020 07:14

Yes, it means slow :o and as others have said the suffix XR or extended release is generally used in English speaking countries instead. In other countries the word retard isn't an insult.

It's Ritalin retard in Germany too. I'm not upset about it in the slightest. They make a huge difference to my life and functioning, I don't care what it's called.

BertieBotts · 14/03/2020 07:15

It's pronounced differently too - reTARD as opposed to the insult which is usually REtard.

OneInEight · 14/03/2020 07:19

Actually I think you are right. Self-esteem can be very low in children with ADHD and they can be very reluctant to take medication because of the inference that you don't like them the way they are. It doesn't matter if "retard" was intended by the pharmaceutical company to mean slow delivery if they read it as "you are stupid". The meaning of words changes over time and there is no reason why the name of the medication could not be changed to remove this.

evilharpy · 14/03/2020 07:20

It’s used in baking too, as in retarding bread dough, and is completely inoffensive.
