DH and I having disagreement about a bracelet! [lighthearted]

saltysow · 13/03/2020 20:24

DH bought me a bracelet for my birthday. It's a little bit too small so he asked if I want to exchange it for the larger size which he said is only 6mm difference. I went on the website to have a look - there's 14.5cm, 17cm and 19.5cm options in length. The one he bought is 14.5cm. I pointed out that that makes it 2.5cm difference in length, not 6mm. He said yes, the length is 14.5cm but the diameter isn't. He has to calculate the diameter from the length to figure out the diameter Confused

Follow much heated discussion and disagreement. Why the hell does he need to know the diameter?! The length is on the website so you just measure your wrist using a tape measure! He said he had to measure the length against one of my bracelets then use Pi to find out the diameter and he's just been laughing at me like I'm a complete idiot by not understanding why.

I know this sounds like a mathematics exam question but I just want to know I'm not going mad!

YABU - you're wrong, your husband is really intelligent
YANBU - what the hell is he talking about?!

First world problem I know but it's just lighthearted!

Does he think that your wrists are perfectly circular 😂

smeerf · 13/03/2020 20:30

I mean, you can work the diameter of the wrist hole from the length of the bracelet using pi, but I'm not sure why you'd bother? Also it's less accurate as it's a smaller measurement.

Does he often over complicate things like this to feel intelligent/superior?

lynzpynz · 13/03/2020 20:31

Why on earth does he need to know the diameter of your wrist when the bracelet is sold by length i.e. circumference?!

Unless he's working out the area of a cut through section of your wrist for some random reason?!

Lunafortheloveogod · 13/03/2020 20:37

He just doesn’t want to admit to over complicating the fuck out of it..

Wrists are not circular nor symmetrical or any form of standard shape (massive bump on my right from an injury no bump on my left so two different sizes and shapes)

You measure round with a tape.

Thehop · 13/03/2020 20:39

You’re right. You don’t measure wrists by diameter, for a bracelet. You measure circumference

SewItGoes · 13/03/2020 20:43

Yeah, that's weird. As PP say, wrists aren't perfectly round, so working out the diameter of the bracelet is pointless. Much better to use a measuring tape around your wrist to determine the best length for the bracelet.

pussycatinboots · 13/03/2020 20:45

YANBU because wrists are measured in length not diameter.

Curious to know what he thinks the diameter of your wrist is.

saltysow · 13/03/2020 20:46

One of my arguments was "I can't put a tape measure through my wrist so why the fuck do I need to know the diameter" 😂

lynzpynz · 13/03/2020 20:51

Tell him he's a daftie and just needs to hands (and wrists!) up admit he's wrong 😂!

Wrists ain't perfect circles, diameter won't be consistent it'll be different at different cross sections... that's why they literally say use a tape measure to measure the circumference to determine the length.

diddl · 13/03/2020 20:59

How embarrassing.

Even if for a bangle you just measure and then use a chart don't you?

Stompythedinosaur · 13/03/2020 21:08

I think he is right. The difference in the diameter will be most relevant to how tight it feels.

He probably didn't need to work it out, though, as there are only certain lengths available so he could just go up a size.

diddl · 13/03/2020 21:10

Unless it's a bangle it won't have a diameter, will it?

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 13/03/2020 21:14

I think he is right. The difference in the diameter will be most relevant to how tight it feels

But... The distance between the left and right of my wrist is very different to the distance between the front and back. How do you get the diameter?

The length makes much more sense. Much.

FairyBatman · 13/03/2020 21:15

Your wrist doesn’t have an equal diameter. It is wider side to side than front to back.

Bracelets, bangles etc. are usually sold by length or circumference, so you just need to measure around your wrist Hmm

TopsyTheReindeer · 13/03/2020 21:27

So he had a bracelet of yours and measured the length of it. And the new bracelets are being sold by length. But he didn't think to just get one the same length?

Instead he farted around working out the diameter? What a pointless waste of time! (Also resulted in him getting the wrong size bracelet, so his "method" blatantly didn't work. Maybe he got his sums wrong.)

Sorry, but he is not very bright. When he buys his clothes, presumably he buys them by collar size or waist or chest size. Does he sit there working out his diameter for that as well?!

Merryoldgoat · 13/03/2020 21:28

He’s trying to make you feel stupid.

Waists and belts are measured in lengths - same principle applies.

saltysow · 13/03/2020 21:34

Exactly! I mentioned waist measurments too. He refused to believe that length=circumference even though he used it in his calculation to find out the diameter!

pigsDOfly · 13/03/2020 21:39

So does he honestly think that everyone who orders one of those bracelets faffs around working out the diameter?

He's nuts.

Horehound · 13/03/2020 21:40

He's an idiot!

lynzpynz · 13/03/2020 21:48

Ask him to measure your wrist for circumference, then work out the diameter of a circle based on that circumference.

Then get him to take the length of the diameter he's worked out and compare it to the diameter of your wrist from left to right, then up and down. Neither will match it as he has worked out the average assuming your wrist is a perfect circle. It is not, in fact its closer to an oval. Left to right will be slightly bigger than he's worked out, up and down will be slightly smaller.

Honestly... 🙄

lifecouldbeadream · 14/03/2020 05:10

Well- both ways work- but it’s 8mm and fairly significant in diameter terms I’d say.

He just doesn’t like being wrong. Using PI as 3.142...... you can prove length = circumference.

sashh · 14/03/2020 05:37

Is it a bangle? If so I can see his logic (and I like maths so this would be fun for me to work out) for a bangle as bangles are round but wrists are not so you need the diameter to be more than the width of your wrist.

For any other type of bracelet he is a loon.

But, whether he is a loon or not, is it something you like? Because that's what really matters.

diddl · 14/03/2020 10:12

Even if it's a bangle though you just measure your hand with your thumb tucked in I think & then consult a chart.

Or try them on!!

JasonBrun · 14/03/2020 10:19

He's an eedjit. Consider a sperm donor.

saltysow · 14/03/2020 10:31

No it's not a bangle, it's a charm bracelet.

We've agreed not to talk about it any more as neither of us will back down Grin
