To think you could use body spray / mist as a hand sanitiser

I can't find hand sanitiser in my local shops so have been looking for an alternative product. I know it needs to be over 60% alcohol to be effective against coronavirus so I've looked for products with alcohol denat listed as the first ingredient. Most body mists / body sprays have alcohol denat listed as the first ingredient. The alcohol denat used would be perfumers alcohol, which is 96% proof (i.e. strong enough to sanitise). So as long as the product formulation is at least 60% alcohol denat it should work as a sanitiser. Trouble is I can't find any information online on exactly what percentage of body mist is alcohol denat. Surely if it's the main ingredient it must be over 60% though. Does anyone know? If we can use body spray as hand sanitiser it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to find than hand gel. It's cheap as chips too.

It’s really annoying me that people keep repeating ‘Washing your hands is enough!’ NO IT ISNT! Hence why the counties whose governments keep repeating this nonsense are the countries with an ever growing number of new cases

Do you understand the timescale of infection and the reasoning behind handwashing? Just because people start washing their hands doesnt mean the transmission rate is going to drop in the short term

Use Milton tablets to make your hand sanitizer🤫 very effective I would imagine.

mnthrowaway202020 · 13/03/2020 14:52

Which specific body spray is it?

GenderApostate19 · 13/03/2020 16:04

Get a ziplock bag, soak a hankie in milton or similar, job done, stays effective all day, better for the enviroment than wipes. I’ve always done this when travelling for wiping down table trays etc.

SarahAndQuack · 13/03/2020 18:39

@grumpos, it's a virus, not a bacterial infection.

Nobody thinks washing your hands is a magic solution. It's just that it is better than hand sanitiser, and certainly better than spraying body mist around.

Are you sure it's effective? I just read this out to DP (who's a cell biologist so does know) and she didn't understand how it could be.

Aha, this must be why all my commutes are suddenly so fragrant! Clever idea, I won't dismiss you for having it.

@GiveHerHellFromUs

Are they honorary degrees?

Oh my lord. I missed that post.

How can you have two science degrees and not understand the difference between proof and percent alcohol? How can you not understand that other ingredients would dilute the alcohol?

I know some people think responses on this thread (inc mine) are harsh, but it really shouldn't take a pandemic for people to cotton on to basic hygiene.

All soaps are essentially the same active ingredient, so use bubble bath, washing up liquid, shampoo, whatever! I refill had wash with bubble bath it’s much cheaper and saves plastic. Washing with soap and water is better than hand sanitiser. Also hand sanitiser only works if your hands are clean anyway. But hand sanitiser good for between washes.

You can but hand sanitiser on amazon really easily !

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 13/03/2020 19:09

YANBU at all to look for other solutions given that hand sanitiser’s become the new hens teeth round here.

I made my own: 2 parts rubbing alcohol (70% volume) with 1 part aloe Vera gel, then just a couple of drops of tea tree oil. Cost me less than a tenner to make up 5x 50ml bottles worth.

The idea of staying in for one week is that COVID by this stage is either getting better, or much worse;
in the latter case you'd then seek medical help

imo, 14 days would be much safer !

User10538 · 29/03/2020 20:03

You can use a so spray as they contain 60% alcohol and I've been using one and it has helped alot.Smile

Could you bring a bottle of soapy water and just wash your hands in the street? A bit if a faff but I have been doing similar to disinfect doors/ etc coming in and out.
You could bring a flannel or two and a plastic bag to keep the damp ones in your bag? I don't know about body mist, im not sure if you mean like a deoderant spray? I really dont know
