To have booked holiday flights for summer holidays?

I've just booked flights for our family holiday in Europe for August. Anyone else planning ahead? Surely we'll all be back to normality by then?

No I haven't booked anything and normally would have everything sorted by now.....

Unhomme · 13/03/2020 07:01

Not unreasonable to plan ahead but I hope you booked insurance at the same time and checked that pandemics are covered in the small print.

rookiemere · 13/03/2020 07:01

Yes YABU. I've just not gone on a ski weekend to France - might have chanced it myself but friends wouldn't- and lost hundreds of pounds. We've got other holidays booked that we'll likely lose money on - am hoping it's sorted by September for a weekend away, but who knows.

I think booking a holiday for the summer now is utter madness. We've no idea what will happen, so putting money into it right now seems a bit rash.

Cupcakegirl13 · 13/03/2020 07:03

YABU too much unknown currently , you may well loose money so as long as you’re comfortable with that risk crack on !

Insideimsprinting · 13/03/2020 07:04

To much uncertainty for me, will insurance cover you considering that there is a major health issue in existence?
It's still yet to peak for many countries so I would be reluctant to book anything now.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 13/03/2020 07:07

Have you got Insurance you can claim on if they end up being cancelled? If so then YANBU. I'm not planning a holiday yet but I don't usually book so far ahead anyway.

We are in the delay phase of the virus. It has been reported that it will be around for months so who knows whether we'll be back to normality by August? We might have to accept a different normality.

adaline · 13/03/2020 07:13

I wouldn't be booking anything right now.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 13/03/2020 07:16

I have flights booked for August for our family holiday. I’m hoping it’ll all be ok by then, so I won’t be cancelling.

I booked the flights back in October before all this came to light, I’m not sure I’d be booking now. Will travel insurance even cover it if it was booked after the pandemic was declared? I’m not sure.

Gottalovesummer · 13/03/2020 07:17

We have a yearly insurance plan.

If flights are cancelled then I am expecting airline to refund so hoping won't be out of pocket. We are staying in my mum's apartment so haven't had to book/pay for accommodation.

middleager · 13/03/2020 07:19

I wouldn't book anything right now - for the indefinite future.

Friendsofmine · 13/03/2020 07:19

I just booked a holiday yesterday and have it in writing if we are grounded by government we get a refund or if we choose to rearrange we just pay an admin fee.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/03/2020 07:20

I’m still planning to drive to the South of a France in August so no I don’t think YABU I think in 5+ months it will be calmer

superram · 13/03/2020 07:21

British airways are offering free cancellation or changes if you book now so why not?

adaline · 13/03/2020 07:23

I suppose it's whether you're willing to risk losing your money or not.

I think if you'd booked months ago then the cancellation policy may be different to if you've booked knowing there is a global pandemic.

NomadNoMore · 13/03/2020 07:31

@superram do you know if that covers flights booked a while ago? DD booked to go to Korea and hasn't been able to get a refund

Insideimsprinting · 13/03/2020 07:33

cancellation policy may be different to if you've booked knowing there is a global pandemic.

My biggest worry for you only worded better!

rookiemere · 13/03/2020 07:33

Anyway I think it will remain as it is today - very few flights stopped, but people knowing it's not a great idea to travel and pulling out themselves. I partly pulled out of my French ski trip as worried about people calling me selfish and irresponsible for going - as they've done to those who went to Italy - when really it's very hard to lose all the money and expectation you'd ploughed into the trip. But of course easier than catching or spreading the disease before anyone slates me for my first world problem.

jaggynettle · 13/03/2020 07:38

I believe if the airline cancel they will offer you alternate flights. Not 100% sure but am sure I read it somewhere last week.

We have a family holiday in Spain in April. It's been booked for over a year and there are 18 of us going - we're not that hopeful it'll go ahead. I added cancellation insurance to our policy when we booked it.

Will wait and see what the guidance is closer to the time but I'm not buying any holiday clothes yet!

pasturesgreen · 13/03/2020 07:39

YABU, I hope you have good travel insurance.

crazydiamond222 · 13/03/2020 07:43

The government are planning for the virus to peak in the summer. It is quite possible that other countries will either not let UK citizens enter or still be dealing with their own outbreaks.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/03/2020 07:43

The OP states she has travel insurance that covers her

Sceptre86 · 13/03/2020 07:48

I want to go away in September but will book closer to the time. If everything is ok by then I expect that holiday prices will go up but hey ho. If now we will stay at home.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2020 07:53

I wouldn’t as I don’t the situation will have improved by then.
As a China resident I have plenty of recent experience in cancelled flights, changing flights due to quarantine restrictions in different countries and struggling to get through to airline offices to change tickets...

lastqueenofscotland · 13/03/2020 07:58

I went skiing last week (to somewhere which had no reported cases at the time)
I have tickets for an event in Dallas in summer which I nearly bought flights for this week and got sidetracked with a busy week. Announced last night it was being postponed!
Move got tickets for the euros as well not booking anything as expect that will be off.

Confuzzled123 · 13/03/2020 08:07

I have holidays booked for July and September. I have the flights booked for September but not July, as I am not sure how things will be then.

If things are still bad I won’t be travelling.
