I was scrolling down BBC online news this morning .... the usual ... coronavirus, stock market.

About the 10th item down was an item entitled “How To Masturbate”.

I didn’t click on it, I wasn’t really wanting to get instruction on that. But I was truly gobsmacked. How is this an online news item? Isn’t it sexually crass? Is it click bait designed to shock and offend? Why is the BBC news website writing this sexual stuff?

I did write a complaint to BBC, and will no doubt hear a justification in due course.

But ..... words fail me.

I get corona and varying issues.

I guess it's your cookies. And hey. No one cares

ghostyslovesheets · 12/03/2020 21:46

well people are going to need to entertain themselves when self isolating so fair enough

HollysBush · 12/03/2020 21:47

Well if you didn’t read it, how do you know what it was actually about?

Starbuck8419 · 12/03/2020 21:49

Maybe you should read it and loosen up a little.
It’s not crass. It’s a fact of life.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/03/2020 21:53

Are you sure it was the BBC website?

If you typed 'lady looking for BBC' into Google and clicked on the first link that might explain the issue.

changeforazog · 12/03/2020 21:54

I'm just imagining you clutching your pearls and writing your complaint letter while someone makes you a strong sweet tea 🤣

I mean, it's hardly the end of the world. Masturbation is pretty normal and actually has health benefits - maybe the BBC are trying to contribute to better sex education?

Rhubarbpeony · 12/03/2020 21:55

What a daft overreaction.

RJnomore1 · 12/03/2020 21:57

@donquixotedelamancha

I did that and got this
www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-bristol-51180061/portishead-s-hedgehog-lady-on-the-hunt-for-volunteers

Totally safe btw!

If you log in, the BBC site is personalised for you, based on what you have previously read and watched. So what have you been looking at before?

Rumbled......

Apparently OP is correct. While I'm not bothered about the content, per se, I do think it's a bit much.

I love the BBC but I can see why some start to resent the license fee.

user1473878824 · 12/03/2020 22:04

It’s not really shocking or offending though is it? It could be classified as click bait but also the BBC isn’t just for news, you’ll find lots of editorial and magazine pieces on the website. You didn’t click on it. Job done.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/03/2020 22:05

I'm just imagining you clutching your pearls and writing your complaint letter while someone makes you a strong sweet tea

I rather picture the OP ordering her coffee strong and black.

AutumnRose1 · 12/03/2020 22:05

With you OP

Not paying for that.

ferntwist · 12/03/2020 22:10

Truly pitiful that the BBC has sunk to this. What a waste of licence fee payers’ money.

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2020 22:13

I hope when you complained, you added that you didn't even read it.

That should give them a good laugh.

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 12/03/2020 22:13

Oh I saw that! I was clicking through my usual news scans and there it was at the bottom of the page, think it was a magazine link. There was another link next to it about sex as well, can't remember what. YADNBU. Not really the standards that the BBC used to aspire to is it.

Lynda07 · 12/03/2020 22:14

It does seem a bizarre thing for the BBC to highlight :-).

DingleberryRose · 12/03/2020 22:20

You complained? 😂

Masturbation should be talked about and normalised!

pointythings · 12/03/2020 22:21

I think that given the state of sex education and the way people seem to expect porn style sex, it's actually rather refreshing to see something that focuses on female pleasure in a completely clear and realistic way. In my native Netherlands people wouldn't be shocked at all.

Starbuck8419 · 12/03/2020 22:26

Not the standards the bbc aspires to.

What, sex?
Oh my god. People have sex and touch themselves to make them feel better. And to think.....0.00001% of the uks tv budget went on that. For shame!!!!

Ohtherewearethen · 12/03/2020 22:27

I don't understand why you're so offended? You have a choice whether to read articles or not based on the titles. You weren't misled or tricked into reading something inappropriate. If it's not you cup of tea then scroll on by. The BBC is desperate to appear current and relevant and if it is to justify charging everybody then it has to appeal to everybody. Not just people who are horrified at facts of life. People wank. It has no effect on your life whatsoever.

Tarttlet · 12/03/2020 22:30

Ugh, no one ever writes articles telling men how to masturbate, do they!? Because women and girls don't ~really~ have sexual desires like boys and men do... To be honest that's far more offensive than the article (which is a bit odd and confusing - does anyone find tapping their pubic bone arousing!?)

Ohtherewearethen · 12/03/2020 22:33

Umm yes Tarttlet, there are plenty of articles aimed at men and boys. It's true what they say, if you really look hard enough you really can find something to be offended by anywhere.

wildcherries · 12/03/2020 22:59

I can't actually believe that you complained. You weren't forced to click, and you didn't.

The pearl-clutching on here sometimes...
