Not sure what is wrong with my baby

Hello all

Sorry I m going to write a long post but I am in desperate need of some advice. My son who is now 12 weeks old and bottle fed (normal SMA from birth milk) doesn’t like to drink milk. We been struggling with milk intake and weight gain since 4 weeks of age. At first I thought it is just colic but when it became almost impossible to make him drink milk then I took him to the gp and he suggested reflux and gave him gaviscon but that didn’t do much. I went to the main hospital and after keeping us for three days in the hospital, they prescribed him omeperazole tablets. I thought now he will drink his milk without a battle but no I was wrong after few days he started refusing feed again and dropped two percentile. They then gave him SMA high energy milk, which made his potty really smelly and green. Again it was really hard to make him drink milk. After three week then they put him on to infertini high energy milk which is a cow milk protein allergy milk. I am giving this milk from last one week and I m yet to see a difference. I am so done with this all now. I really don’t know what is wrong with him. I mean even with this special milk he cries a lot while drinking and gets really unsettled. I mean i know he is hungry and crying bcoz he wants milk but as soon as I give him a bottle he refuses or after taking few sips he starts crying. He is been like this since weeks 4. I mean whatever doctors are giving us not making any difference. What should I do now. I am feeling really depress as I am not enjoying this time. I dread feed times. Please help

Have you tried any other brands? Are his nappies wet enough. Bowel movements?

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 12/03/2020 02:19

Sounds daft but could it be the temperature of the milk?

Notajogger · 12/03/2020 02:23

Could it be to do with tongue tie?

Samart · 12/03/2020 02:33

Yes he has normally 1-2 dirty nappy a day and on his bad days he has less wet nappies but generally not dehydrated. I gave him pacifier bcoz I was so fed up of his crying and being so unsettled that in the end I had to give him dummy.
It is so hard to see him cry in hunger but not taking his bottle without a battle. I mean even now he started wiggling in his sleep at 12:30 but when I gave him bottle he started crying after few sips and since then I am holding him and try to settle him. He just had milk which is 2.5oz (70ml) and it’s 2:30 am now. I am shattered. I have a 4 year old too. I need to get up in the morning to send him to school. Health visitors are useless they don’t have any answers

After the normal SMA, he has been in prescribed milk so I can’t change brands without doctor’s approval.
I don’t think it’s the temperature of the milk bcoz I have tried warm, room temperature and a bit cold but nothing works.
Don’t think he is tongue tied bcoz he has been checked with the pediatrician loads of time. They must of checked. And also he suck on his dummy fine.

Have you tried a different brand of bottle? My lo loves her milk but if I give her a different teat/bottle she flat out refuses it, even when she is starving

Bluebelltulip · 12/03/2020 03:00

If it is CMPA then it can take 6 weeks milk free for all symptoms to disappear but an improvement in symptoms is normally seen within 2 weeks, so stick with it for a bit longer. I hope you find the answer soon.

Monkeymilkshake · 12/03/2020 03:06

I was going to ask about different bottles/teats too..i know one friend who had to try quite a few before her baby found one he liked!

TheGirlWithAPrince · 12/03/2020 03:24

I second bottle, my baby loved Mam but hated all others. Also see if the doctors prescribed milk is dairy free.

Both my kids are dairy intolerant and have been put on SMA pepti formula so maybe ask about that.

Both my babies also prefer it different temperatures and different teats on the bottle ( fast flow, low flow)

Imtootired · 12/03/2020 04:32

It could be a last resort to try and find a breast milk bank. Please don’t anyone jump down my throat I’m just thinking of a solution

PurpleMonkeyDishwasher86 · 12/03/2020 04:39

Another one suggesting trying a different bottle and/or teat. Maybe it isn't flowing fast enough for him, he simply doesn't like the shape, or the design of the bottle is increasing his wind?

Igottaknowyounow · 12/03/2020 04:45

Are they suspecting CMPA?
Is he on infatrini or infatrini peptisorb?
Peptisorb still has milk protein but it’s broken down. He might not be tolerating that.
Normal infatrini is not suitable for CMPA.

Something like neocate is extensively hydrolysed - no milk protein at all.

I hope you can get to the bottom of what’s going on

Limpshade · 12/03/2020 05:22

Both my babies were prescribed omeprazole. I found the only brand of bottle they could both happily drink from was Dr Browns as those bottles have an "anti-colic" vent inside them. Goats milk formula also helped us (I mix fed from 6 months) but it can be expensive.

PsuedoSatisfactionBaby · 12/03/2020 05:27

Another one suggesting different bottles.... Dr Browns anti colic were the only ones that worked for my kids after loads of trial and error. I’ve a cupboard full of discarded bottles that were rejected. It was so worrying and then I remember the day I tried the dr brown bottle and DC started greedily downing the milk I was so relieved. Good luck OP

ColaFreezePop · 12/03/2020 05:36

Try different bottles at different price points.

I started with expensive brands then in desperation bought some own brand from Asda and some from Boots, and my DD only would drink from those.

welshladywhois40 · 12/03/2020 05:52

Different bottles and test sizes and milk type. Try all. I had a baby that didn't feed well so we swapped from tommee tippee bottles to mam. Went up a teet size earlier then usual so he didn't have to try so hard for milk and he fed best off hipp milk.

My son used to drink about 70% of the recommended daily amount. I was forever at the hv clinic stressing to which they decided he had the ability to drink the minimum to survive.

QueenofmyPrinces · 12/03/2020 06:00

As has been said, normal Infatrini has milk in it - it is not suitable for babies with CMPA. Please make sure it is Infatrini Peptisorb that has been prescribed for your baby and not the regular one.

MrsCrabbyTree · 12/03/2020 06:06

This must be so distressing and my heart goes out to you and baby.

A friend of my daughter had difficulty feeding her newborn. Turned out his shoulder was dislocated during birth causing great pain while being fed.
Could some part of baby be injured?

I hope that you find a solution very very soon. Flowers

RedRedWines · 12/03/2020 06:06

My baby was absolutely infuriated by the stage 1 teat. We had to give him medium flow pretty early on

QueenofmyPrinces · 12/03/2020 06:16

I had a similar problem and ended up seeing a Cranial Osteopath and she fixed my baby’s feeding problems - she was amazing.

If you can afford it OP, it may be worth having your baby assessed by one.

Foggymist · 12/03/2020 06:48

Get baby checked for tongue tie by a specialist in it or a lactation consultant, I wouldn't assume it's been checked because they often don't but it's also difficult to spot a posterior tongue tie.

lifecouldbeadream · 12/03/2020 06:57

@Samart, I’d really recommend you read what @Igottaknowyounow said above. There are different types of CMPA milk some have the protein just broken down and others are made from a totally different type of protein which has never been milk- if your baby is severely CMPA, you need a type which has never been milk. Some milk allergic babies can not tolerate soya either as the proteins are similar. If this www.nutriciahcp.com/uploadedFiles/Main/Sub_sites/ONS_Site/ons/shop/Infatrini-Datacard(47).pdf is the milk you’ve been given, it says not suitable for CMPA.

Non-milk formulas are extremely expensive, so you may find that doctors try a broken down protein formula first.

Daisychainsandglitter · 12/03/2020 07:30

It's worth investigating CMPA OP both my DD's had this and did not respond to the prescription formulas that were prescribed until they were put onto an amino acid formula called Neocate.
It was an awful time having babies that just screamed constantly. They'd be hungry but would refuse the milk or struggle with it really badly.
I really feel for you OP and I hope it's resolved for you soon. Thanks

Samart · 12/03/2020 08:40

Yes he is on infertini peptisorb. Which they said is for CMPA. I will ask again but I know they will say that he is now following 9th percentile and gaining weight so I shouldn’t worry. How would I make them realize that how hard I have to work to make him have even sometime 60 ml of milk. I mean I m always trying to make him have milk. I am so fed up of this. I don’t go out bcoz I feel that all I will be doing there is calming him and feeding him. 😥😥
Do you guys think after being on avent bottles for 12 weeks he will take any other bottle? My older one hated changing bottles.
