Change of job title

I'm on long term leave at the moment and have been told that my job title has changed. It is to my detriment. I don't want to be specific but original job title would indicate a senior role, new title could apply from entry to the field and is completely generic. The change is not specific to me from what I've been told and it doesn't affect any other aspect of the role.

Aibu to think I can challenge the change and have my original title reinstated? Original title was stated in my contract and there was no discussion prior to informing me of the change. One of my biggest concerns is future employment opportunities. I don't think I'd even be considered for roles at my level with the new title.

This happened to me right after I came back from mat leave Hmm. I objected but my manager had a bee in her bonnet about it and I was too vulnerable to put up a fight (she hinted my trial period of flexible working would not be continued if I carried on arguing). It still rankles a bit. Sorry, no advice other than don't be me!

As long as your role stays the same then regardless of your title your work should speak for its self.
As an employer role titles mean nothing, to some degree even level of education, the Proof is in the pudding as they say. For an employee worth their weight in gold with a great worth ethic and fab skills is what matters. I hate the titles that sound good, but scratch Beneath the surface their skills don't live up.

Don't get hung up on it, it's the quality of what you do that's important not the fancy senior title.

Also if they’re doing it to several people it would be hard to claim discrimination I think.

Abracad · 11/03/2020 14:53

You are perfectly reasonable to be annoyed and if it is in your contract I imagine you have grounds to object. Hard to imagine this being acceptable in any other circumstance.

Is it just you who has had a job title change? Has your role, seniority and pay changed? Do you think you are effectively being managed out of a job?

Incontinencesucks · 11/03/2020 15:17

So is this a restructuring? Leading to redundancies?

i don't agree. When I'm recruiting I'm chucking out CVs that don't show an applicant has worked in an approximately similar position. If I'm looking for a Senior Manager, anyone who doesn't have that or Manager on their CV is straight in the reject pile. Nobody, these days has time to read all the descriptions of what you've done.

HeartyGreenSalad · 11/03/2020 15:55

I think you'd be foolish not to challenge it. Are you in a union ? I thought changes had to be agreed by both parties though

I think your feelings are completely understandable. The thing to remember is that your job title isn’t important when it comes to future employers/CVs etc.

If you take LinkedIn as an example, you should use an industry recognised job title to describe yourself, and keep this updated to stay relevant, rather than feel you’re locked into the one being used by your employer - this is important for search algorithms. It’s also important as some companies use words with specific meaning to describe quite general activities (engineer is a great example of this, also manager).

Similarly, from a CV perspective, you might have a list of key achievements and responsibilities, followed by your competencies and then qualifications and accreditations. Your career history would be a one line job title/company/date table at the end of the CV.

I think, if you can separate your reaction from the true impact of the change that might help.

these days people use softwares to pick up keywords and don't bother reading the first batch of cv...

I've had so much dead wood, good titles, things that look good on paper but the person's skills don't add up in various ways.
I take the time, it's worth the effort scratching beneath the surface and clearing the smoke screen.
I would love the fancy software that digs deeper but for now patience and digging a bit deeper is worth it not to end up feeling let down.
