In reporting a Police Dog Handler

For leaving his dog in the police van unattended for long stretches?

One of my neighbours has begun a relationship with a police dog handler. He’s gone out and left the dog in the van. It’s getting quite sunny here, and I’ve just realised the dog has been barking for a bit, so I’m assuming it’s getting hot in there. It’s not the first time he’s done it - who should I report him to?

Definitely report, maybe the non emergency police number of your local station?

You say he’s gone out? So he has left his dog van and gone out with your neighbour?

Windyatthebeach · 11/03/2020 11:02

Shagging on duty surely isn't acceptable? Poor ddog.
Report for sure.

Hadjab · 11/03/2020 11:03

@Missfritter I assume so as her car is gone

Have you checked of the van has A/C running, most of the police dog vans have a cooling unit fitted so the dog can be left in them safely.

HomeEdRocks18 · 11/03/2020 11:05

The vans are temperature controlled for the dogs. They treat the dogs as part of the family as they raise them at home so they have a better bond. Dont report him

pancakesunday · 11/03/2020 11:05

I think I remember seeing that the vehicles they transport police dogs in are air conditioned even if the engine isn't running. I could be wrong but it might be worth checking out.

mrsbeeton999 · 11/03/2020 11:06

Proper dog vans have air con in them so dogs can be left in at but I assume you’d hear it? But visiting his lady friend whilst working needs reporting I think and obviously the dog shouldn’t be stuck in car for long periods of time even if it’s got air con that works when parked.

Hadjab · 11/03/2020 11:06

@wombat1a nope, I’ll check

Dog handler vans are climate controlled.
Don't report him just tell him that his dog was barking.
They bond very closely so I seriously doubt he is making his dog uncomfortable.

On a side note if you don't carry your crack stash in your pocket the dog won't bark.

Windyatthebeach · 11/03/2020 11:11

He needs reporting if he is on duty and has gone off with his gf.
What if the van is hit by another vehicle while parked up?

Hadjab · 11/03/2020 11:16

I’ve checked, I can hear a gentle hum which I’m assuming is the air con. Dog is still barking though.

Don’t know if he’s on or off duty.

Thanks all

If he was off duty surely he would have his own vehicle and his dog by his side not left in distress while he gets his leg over...
Leave it to his boss to investigate...

IntermittentParps · 11/03/2020 11:45

Yes, I agree. Report. If it's nothing it's nothing; if it's something that needs sorting they'll sort it.

MagentaRocks · 11/03/2020 11:47

Dog handlers have their work van all the time as they have the dog full time so he is probably on a day off.

ChibiTotoro · 11/03/2020 11:53

Why not just knock in your neighbour's door and say that you are concerned that the dog is left in the vehicle too long? If you are genuinely concerned about the dog it's likely to remedy the situation quicker.

AParallelUniverse · 11/03/2020 11:56

If the dog is in an aircon van then no need to report him.

CornishPorsche · 11/03/2020 12:04

Dog handlers use the work vehicle at basically all times. Very normal. Because if the air con.

He's not mistreating a dog if he's leaving it in the van - these are not pets, they are working dogs.

Rationalcat · 11/03/2020 12:06

But the dog continously barking is not a good sign.
How long has it been left?

Coldilox · 11/03/2020 12:10

Depends on area. In my force dog handlers most certainly don’t keep their work car/van off duty. They have to have a suitable vehicle of their own with a suitable cage fitted in it. None of them would want to be driving round in a marked up police vehicle in their own time anyway, I know I wouldn’t.

ScrumptiousBears · 11/03/2020 12:15

Police dogs bark especially when they hear someone is near the van. The van will have air con.

However it's not acceptable if he's visiting her whilst he's meant to be on duty.

TheReluctantCountess · 11/03/2020 12:16

I’d be concerned too. Perhaps ring the non-emergency number for advice.

Herpesfreesince03 · 11/03/2020 12:18

I’m sure there are rules about leaving police dogs unattended in vans for any length of time. I’d definitely report it

Hadjab · 11/03/2020 12:21

@ChibiTotoro they aren’t in, hence why the dog is in the van.

Hadjab · 11/03/2020 12:22

@Rationalcat a little over an hour and a half now

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 11/03/2020 12:22

I'd report it if they are not in the house.
