WIBU to go full time is pay worth it?

Hi, so I currently work 30 hours a week, 6 hours a day plus half an hour lunch. So in effect I start an hour and a half later than others in my office or finish an hour and a half early.

A full time post has become available and I would be in with a good chance of getting it if I asked. The thing is that hour and a half is precious to me...it gives me time to shop, appointments, paperwork etc and I have a SEN child so I do have plenty of appointments.

The office is lovely and very flexible so I know I could work around the appointments, the thing is the take home would only be around £200 a month more and I would lose the tiny amount of UC we currently get so in effect probably around £100 extra a month.

However the chances of promotions in my role are huge so there is plenty of progression potential. In my part time role even though I will have more experience the possibility that the full timer will be more likely to be put forward is there though I can make it clear I would go full time for promotion.

What would you do? Is this worth it? Thank you for any opinions!

If progression is something you're looking at in the future, then yes I would take the full time position.

I've just done the sums to work out what I need my salary to become in order to esrb the same and do 5x 6h days. We can work through our lunches on a 6h day so that means even more time at home.

However if promotion and progression is the aim then it's worth it in the long run.

Hmmm if the hour and a half is precious to you and you find it invaluable then I would stick to part time. It is harder to get promoted if PT, it shouldn't be but it is, but it doesn't sound like it would be out of the question to go FT in the future? Have a think about the balance as well as the money.

Hi thank you all for your thoughts!

It's a tough one as I know it would help in the long run but right now the 30 hours really suits me. It's local so I don't have to worry about commuting times and I love everyone I work with. I wouldn't think twice if it was going to be more take home ... eventually though it could be!

It's upto you. Personally though, if I was going to work 30 hours I would do it over four days and have an extra full day at home. I know that doesn't really help your situation though Grin

It sounds like you would be doing it for the chance of promotion and you have to weigh up how much you want this at this time. Working full time is hard. I think you will really miss that hour and a half. I would love to work 4 days but my employer prefers full or half time and I can’t afford to drop to half.
